Former Overwatch Pro Shocked by Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Toxicity

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War keeps plenty of the series’ staples intact, such as tight gunplay, three-lane map design, and, apparently, toxicity. Despite many players using party chat to communicate nowadays, a former professional Overwatch player has found that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War lobbies are just as hostile as ever.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players seem to be angry about a lot as of late, whether it be the lack of maps in Black Ops Cold War or the ADS time on sniper rifles. On top of that, the usual rage brought out through the addictive CoD gameplay is likely part of the aggression in lobbies as well, though nothing excuses the toxicity seen by Overwatch star xQc.

While Overwatch consistently combats toxicity through updates, the Call of Duty series is known to host some vile gamers. xQc found this out the hard way when he attempted to tell two players to stop fighting “at 3 AM on a Monday,” with one player instantly firing a shot at xQc in response. The player makes fun of xQc’s content before telling him to kill himself over basically nothing, leaving the former Overwatch pro speechless.

After a load screen where xQc’s mouth remained open, shocked by the hostility, the fighting resumed via the game’s voice chat. While plenty of the phrases used will not be repeated here, this lobby argument is just as harsh as some of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 lobbies over a decade ago. The much-memed gatherings of players are known for trash talk and shouting, and the latest CoD game seems to be keeping the tradition alive.

While the former Overwatch pro may have had a better time playing against bots in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, he did offer some good comebacks of his own to the harsh insults. After being criticized over his content once again, xQc shut the aggressor up by saying that he makes their “lifetime income in two streams.” While the majority of xQc’s dive into the game was full of trash talk and screaming, it is a fun watch for those accustomed to the bad language and cruelness of some CoD players.

For Call of Duty players who have experienced this toxicity themselves, perhaps looking at some Black Ops Cold War memes will help to calm down. Beyond that, using party chat instead of voice chat may be the right move, as it is unlikely that the in-game chats of Call of Duty will ever be less toxic than the one found by xQc.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
