Season 5 of The Expanse is on the horizon and fans are itching for more adventures with the crew of the Rocinante. After a trailer released last month, little else has been revealed aside from a new poster. So why not dissect the trailer and see what might be waiting when the new episodes drop?
Following season 4’s introduction of Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander), leader of a new “Free Navy” and a haunting presence from Naomi Nagata’s (Dominique Tipper) past, season 5 looks to teeter on the brink of a system-wide conflict with Marco at the center. As he attempts to unite the people of the Belt against the Inner Planets (in a plan that apparently includes attacking Earth), the crew of the Rocinante look to solve problems of their own without falling face first into a fight they can’t possibly win… again.
The trailer sees all the series favorites back at the forefront in their own ways, with sometimes captain and sometimes well-meaning idiot James Holden (Steven Strait) struggling between his personal obligations and his feelings of responsibility for the whole system. Meanwhile, Naomi looks to find her long lost son, and hopefully rescue him from the influence of his radical warmongering father. James and Naomi may have to figure some things out as a couple and as individuals if they want to preserve their relationship.
In a different part of the system, Amos Burton (Wes Chatham) returns to Earth to confront his own past. The hot-headed crewmate that fans expected to hate but ended up adoring has been working on figuring himself out since the early seasons, so a breakthrough would be very interesting to see. On the same planet, Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) continues to fight for peace even after losing the election, proving that her drive was never performative.
Season 5 also sees Bobbie Draper (Frankie Adams) teaming up with Alex Kamal (Cas Anvar), whom she befriended while on the Rocinante, as they work for the sake of their mutual home planet of Mars. Previous seasons saw the two sharing some genuine chemistry, and with Alex’s recent family drama, who knows where things might go? Finally, Captain Camina Drummer (Cara Gee) continues her own path of redemption as she puts effort into doing what she thinks is right with her new crew.
It’s a lot to take in, which makes the ever shortening wait for season 5 all the more agonizing. It seems like the Sol system is always on the brink of war in The Expanse, and yet every season ups the stakes just a little more. Season 5 looks to be no different, so look forward to some more exciting sci-fi action, drama, and Amos punching things.
The Expanse season 5 will premiere its first 3 episodes December 16th, 2020 on Prime Video.
