Ever since its release, the big question for Marvel’s Avengers was when it would receive new playable heroes. Some of these characters have already been confirmed – namely the two Hawkeyes, Black Panther, and Spider-Man – but the lack of a roadmap of any kind meant fans have no idea how much longer they’ll have to wait for them to arrive.
Thankfully, it seems Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are ready to at least give fans a proper look at the first of these DLC characters, Kate Bishop, in one of Avengers‘ War Table livestreams. The stream will be held tomorrow on November 19th at 8am PST / 11am EST / 4pm GMT.
Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics haven’t stated what exactly will be shown during it, but it’s safe to assume that they will demonstrate how Kate will play, her unique abilities, as well as give a sneak peek at her storyline and, hopefully, confirm a release date. Though it was previously said that she had to be delayed past her intended release date, it was assured that she would be made available before the end of 2020, so she’ll likely come out either later this month or sometime in December.
The announcement does tease her storyline a little bit, explaining that she was on her way to becoming an Avenger herself until the A-Day incident. From the sound of it, players will see her partner up with her mentor Clint Barton (the first Hawkeye, who will likely be made playable in 2021) as they investigate the disappearance of Nick Fury, SHIELD’s former director.
It’s too early to tell, though, if Kate’s inclusion will breathe new life into Avengers. The game has been undeniably waning in popularity since its launch. Despite performing well in the sales charts, it was mired with bugs and glitches that hurt its reputation. And though most of those problems have since been addressed, players have found little reason to stick around.
Not only has the player base dwindled, but Square Enix’s most recent financial report reveals that the company has suffered a massive loss in the wake of the game’s release. And this is supposed to be the big live-service game that will keep players invested for years to come, with several years’ worth of content still apparently planned out.
Avengers has since offered free content, discounts, and other minor additions but, so far, none of it seems to be winning people back. There’s an argument to be made that it’s almost close to dying entirely, with all that’s left being it to switch to a free-to-play model, much like other live-service titles before it.
Marvel’s Avengers is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One. It will release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2021.
