The Game Awards nominees for 2020 have officially been announced. The list includes plenty of popular and revolutionary games. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and many others share the spotlight in this celebration of gaming achievement. Winners will be revealed on Thursday, December 10.
One of the most discussed games of the year has 11 nominations. The Last of Us 2 is nominated for Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Audio Design, Innovation in Accessibility, Best Action/Adventure, and two entries for Best Performance. The sequel to one of the most highly acclaimed video games of all time had a lot to live up to, and these categories will help determine if The Last of Us 2 was a worthy end to the story.
Another game that stole the show is Ghost of Tsushima. This video game had nothing to live up to but itself and was one of the most anticipated games going into 2020. Ghost of Tsushima racked up a total of 7 nominations and is a contender for Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Performance, and Best Action/Adventure.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake arrived with a bang after being delayed a number of times over its creation. Fans waited a long time for this game to finally release, and it was nominated for quite a few awards. The remake of one of the other most critically acclaimed games of all time is nominated for 6 awards for Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, and Best Role Playing.
The game that exploded into 2020 was the roguelike mythological adventure Hades. This game wasn’t as highly discussed as some of the others, but it became a massive sensation upon release. Hades has 8 nominations this year for Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Performance, Best Indie, and Best Action.
A few games have surprised people for not being featured in this year’s awards. Cyberpunk 2077 was discussed as a likely contender for Game of the Year, but its delayed release has pushed it back too far to be counted. It will very likely appear on next year’s lists for that category as well as several other categories. The new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has ended up in a similar situation. While Modern Warfare takes its spot this year, Black Ops Cold War will likely show up in the nominations for 2021.
