It may not be the most anticipated Nintendo Switch release of 2020, but the dedicated Picross fanbase has been anxiously awaiting news regarding Jupiter’s next game. Jupiter has now delivered, announcing Picross S5 for the Switch in a surprise Wednesday confirmation. Better yet, Picross S5 is going to be released surprisingly soon. It’s bypassing the previously announced Picross S: Mega Drive & Mark 3 Edition to launch next week on November 26.
A short trailer was released accompanying the Picross S5 announcement confirming much of the content that will be included in the puzzle game. Suffice to say, Picross S5 won’t be reinventing the wheel. The game will feature four types of Picross puzzles, including standard Picross, Mega Picross, Color Picross, and Clip Picross. There’s also the return of the humongous puzzles unlocked by owning previous Picross S edition games.
Between Picross and Mega Picross, which typically mirror the same puzzles, there are 300 new grids to solve in Picross S5, and 30 new Color Picross puzzles with animated gif solutions will also be included, a good number that never feels like enough. Finally, 150 Clip Picross puzzles will round out the game. The theme of the Clip Picross solutions has been kept mysterious, for the time being.
Funnily enough, Jupiter did reveal one new feature. There will be a new timer that tracks how much time the player has spent playing Picross S5 in total. It’s perhaps to encourage players to 100% the game as fast as possible, but it may prove a harsh reminder to players just how much time they’ve spent playing Picross overall. Regardless, while Picross S5 isn’t changing much of anything, it’s still more Picross puzzles on Nintendo Switch, which is all most fans really want.
Picross S5 releases November 26 on Nintendo Switch.
