Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Die Maschine Zombie Easter Egg Step-by-Step Breakdown

As with every Treyarch game, there’s little doubt that many have been diving into the Zombies game mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War hard. And, once again, as with Treyarch zombies mode, there is an elaborate Easter egg for players to complete.

Doing so requires about four complicated steps and initial preparations ahead of time. As such, here’s everything players need to know about completing the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Die Maschine Easter Egg.

Before starting, players need to complete the following:

  • Turn on the Power – From the Yard, go north into Omega Outpost. Head up the staircase, following the purple arrow, and take a right through the next room. Keep following the purple arrow while heading to the end and blowing up a wall. Head to the bottom of the Crash Site from there, then into the Tunnels, and then left into the Facility. This door is free, so continue on through to the control room where there will be three doors. Take the one to the East to the Medical Bay, then open the next door to the Particle Accelerator. Once more door will get players to the Red Power Switch; flip it, and let there be light. It’s worth highlighting that this series of doors and debris will set players back by roughly 8000.
  • Unlock the Pack-a-Punch – The Pack-a-Punch is iconic and is a necessary step in practically all Zombies maps across all games, Black Ops Cold War‘s Die Maschine included. To activate it, players will need to take the Dark Aether portal near the Particle Accelerator, which marks a part for the Pack-a-Punch. Once players pick it up and repair the Pack-a-Punch machine, they will be teleported out of the Dark Aether.
  • Get the D.I.E. Shockwave Wonder Weapon – After turning on power and unlocking the Pack-a-Punch, a Megaton Zombie will spawn. Killing it rewards a Golden Keycard that should be taken to the Weapons Lab in the Facility building. Opposite of the Zombies’ Mystery Box here, there will be a computer for the keycard. This will allow players to pick up the D.I.E. Remote Control. Afterward, players will need to find The Living Room in the Nacht Der Untoten, find the cracked wall, and activate the D.I.E. machine through the hole. Players will then to kill roughly 30 zombies as close to the machine as possible, which is easily identified by the machine sucking souls from Zombies. Once this is done, interactive with the hole again, which will then allow players to enter and obtain the D.I.E Shockwave Wonder Weapon off a corpse.
  • Get the Aetherscope – Players will need to kill enough zombies for a Aether portal to open, which will be marked on the map. There are three necessary parts for the Aetherscope, which can show up in any order in the Dark Aether. One is found near the staircase close to Speed Cola, next to a portal and a zombie spawn. The next is in the Yard, right under the staircase. And the last one is on the plane in the Crash Site area, reached by going through the laboratory or the main building’s second floor.

Once prepared for the Die Maschine Zombies Easter egg, players will need to go to the Medical Bay in the Dark Aether. Players will easily find Doctor Vogel’s Diary on top of the old computer there, which in turn will cause three Spectral Anomalies to spawn around the Aether. These look like little blue orbs, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players will need to find and interact with them.

  • Medical Bay: Found on the lowest floor, directly beneath the diary’s location.
  • Control Room: Found inside the Control Room. Enter from the Facility and the Anomaly will be to the right.
  • Particle Accelerator: Found next to the Workbench (which is also handy in getting the Black Ops Cold War Craftwork achievement).

After interacting with all of them, players will need to return to the Medical Bay computer AFTER leaving the Dark Aether. Inputting a password will reactivate the large device.

Before moving forward, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players will need to upgrade the D.I.E. Shockwave Wonder Weapon:

  • D.I.E. Thermophasic – For this upgrade, players need to enter the Dark Aether, head to the Crash Site, and find the small box beneath the floating plane. There’s a time limit, so players will need to quickly melee said box, take the fuse to the Weapons Lab in Facility, place it in the Plasma Cutter across from the Black Ops Cold War Perk Machine, and return to the normal world. Once back, head to the pond and find the weapon by interacting with a green box on the bed of an old truck.
  • D.I.E Thunderbolt – For this upgrade, players will need to make three separate trips into the Dark Aether (via the Portal under Pack-A-Punch) to get three energy crystals. Players can only have one at a time, which will then need to be returned to the Particle Accelerator room and shot into the box. These can be collected in any order: One energy crystal is near The Tunnel in Crash Site, one is above the Stamina-Up Machine on Nacht Der Untoten’s Roof, and the final one is near the mystery box in Pond.
  • D.I.E. Nova 5 – In the Mezzanine room, there is a golden canister that can be sucked to the player by the D.I.E. Wonder Weapon that needs to be placed in the white machine found in the Weapon Labs of the Facility. This will spawn a Plaguehound that, when killed, contaminates the canister. Players will need to be sure to pick it back up, take it to the Crash Site, and interact with (and then smash) a box by the crashed plan to receive this upgrade.
  • D.I.E Cryo Emitter – Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players will need to head to the Penthouse of the Nacht Der Untoten building, where over the edge is a box that should be shot. This will drop a Flask into the Pond area, and once this is collected, players should kite a Megaton Zombie to the nearby fungus-covered tree and make it attack the tree with its radioactive attack. The next step is to use the flask on the tree, collect it once filled, take it to the Medical Bay, and use it on the chained box to get the Cryo-Emitter.

Afterward, players simply need to return to the device and shoot the four cylinders with each upgrade, causing them to rise. And for those who prefer a more visual guide to completing Easter egg, we recommended YouTuber NoahJ56‘s video due to its clear presentation:

For the next step, players will need to return to the Dark Aether and head up the Balcony to speak with an Anomaly. This will send players to fetch the Dark Aether Wrench from the Medical Bay, then to the Yard to fix the old ruined tank. There are four spots that need to be repaired. Kill the Zombie that emerges and then use a Semtex or Frag grenade via the Crafting table to make it fire a shot near the Crash Site area.

Players will find a tree there, close to the Perk Machine, and can obtain the Decontamination Agent from that spot. The next step is to take it back to the Medical Bay, which in turn will spawn a Megaton Zombie. Only deal enough to damage to split it into two, and then lure it into the device. Once it’s sucked up, players will need to activate the Medical Bay computer once again, triggering a lock down where players should rush to the surface area. It’s going to be a rough fight with multiple waves of Megaton Zombies and Plaguehounds; players will just need to hold out and kill zombies until the waves are complete.

Once that’s done, players need to go to the Nacht Der Untoten building and enter the Dark Aether. Players will need to go the Omega Outpost, speak with Orlov, and interact with the photo to start the next and final step.

The final step of the Die Maschine Easter egg is relatively straightforward, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Before anything else, players need to make sure they’re ready with their preferred Black Ops Cold War Zombies weapons and plenty of ammo. Players will need to protect Orlov during the shut down of the Particle Accelerator, which means facing three incoming waves of Zombies. It’s easy to get overrun, but players should rely on their Wonder Weapons to deal a ton of damage and keep them off Orlov. Once the Particle Accelerator is done, players just need to rush back to the pond while avoiding Lightning strikes, and doing so will players finish this Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Easter egg.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
