A fan has created a crossover between Among Us and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, the latest installment in the Kingdom Hearts series. Specifically, the video shows how Among Us betrayal mechanics could make Melody of Memory‘s multiplayer mode more chaotic than it already is.
Although Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is primarily a single-player rhythm game recapping the series’ story, it features an intense local and online competition mode. Players can send “tricks” to their competitors, which make it harder to follow the rhythm in a variety of ways. For example, the game may shrink or remove the standard timing guide. This can result in rapid failure, as players lose track of the rhythm and make more mistakes.
Created by YouTuberr Bio-Roxas, the video depicts a Melody of Memory battle between Among Us characters dressed as Sora and Riku, two of the main Kingdom Hearts protagonists. Although Sora initially has a lead, the match takes an unusual turn when the Riku character kills him, leaving only the bottom half behind. As might be expected, Sora can no longer battle, giving Riku the chance to win by causing a reactor meltdown, one of the win conditions for Among Us imposters.
The scenario perfectly highlights the frustration of getting a bad start in either game. Getting the wrong combination of “tricks” in Melody of Memory can mean certain doom, and getting trapped by an imposter in Among Us can mean an early death. This is not to say that the frustration is bad – it plays a key part of Among Us, and Melody of Memory fans are already clamoring for the campaign to have a traditional, ultra-hard Critical Mode. Still, the ability to murder opponents in Melody of Memory would likely take the difficulty too far.
It’s also amusing that the video chooses to have Riku kill Sora. Although Riku is a hero worthy of a standalone game, that wasn’t always the case. He serves as a villain for much of the first Kingdom Hearts game, and spends many later games learning to use the power of darkness without being corrupted. Still, the video uses hairstyles from Kingdom Hearts 3, so it’s not an explicit homage to the first game.
Even if the Sora and Riku personas don’t map onto the Among Us characters perfectly, those characters do have some personality of their own. Although it might be hard to spot, subtle Among Us lore does exist in the game, suggesting the red player character might be the canonical imposter. In any case, players don’t have to worry about brutal deaths in Melody of Memory, although they have plenty of other ways to lose thanks to the “trick” system.
Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is available now for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One.
Among Us is available now for PC and mobile.
