Cyberpunk 2077 is a massive game that responds dynamically to player choices in all sorts of ways. The first choice players must make, and perhaps the most important, is to choose a Life Path. This is the background that the protagonist, V, comes from, with each Life Path having a different opening sequence.
The Life Paths included in the game are the corporation-bound Corpo, the rough-and-tumble Street Kid, and the outsider Nomad. Each one provides V with relative social advantages and disadvantages compared to the others, which presumably influence the way some events play out. However, players enjoying multiple saves across different Life Paths may be concerned that they’ll have difficulty determining which is which.
Cyberpunk 2077 features a save label system that marks saves based on the player’s chosen Life Path. This will be very useful in looking through old saves, although it is unclear whether this will help distinguish between two playthroughs of the same Life Path.
Lukasz Babiel, head of Quality Assurance for CD Projekt Red, clarified the way the game’s save system handles Life Paths. Each file is marked with the path players choose, so players can easily distinguish them. This will help players know what to load when juggling multiple playthroughs or going through old ones, making it easier to see new sides of Night City’s densely-packed map.
At this time, however, it is unclear what will happen if someone has two different playthroughs that involve the same Life Path. If the save files are only marked with the Life Path name, it will be difficult or impossible to distinguish between them. Given that there are extensive customization features for protagonist V, someone could want to make different files for the same Life Path from the outset, in order to see what different characters look like in the same situation.
The way that Cyberpunk 2077 relies on player choice suggests that players will want to frequently reload, as their choices may have unintended consequences. For example, the developers have stated that players can even reach Cyberpunk 2077‘s ending through side quests alone, possibly taking completionists by surprise. If this happens, they will surely want to reload an earlier save.
There’s another major reason why players may find themselves sorting through old Cyberpunk 2077 game saves. Although the game will not launch with support for next-gen consoles, CD Projekt Red will provide free access to the next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 when they do become available. As this will likely happen at some point in 2021, players may want to dust off their old save files to see them on their new Xbox or PlayStation consoles. Hopefully, the Life Path save labels will make that a little bit easier.
Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to release on December 10th for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions also in development.
