5,000 families in Atlanta, Georgia have something extra to be thankful for this year thanks to Tyler Perry. Perry’s studio, the aptly named Tyler Perry Studios, announced over Twitter that they would be giving away non-perishable food items and gift cards to the first 5,000 families in need who arrived at the event. The poster for the event read: “First come, first serve of 5,000 families while supplies last. Although we wish that we could feed everyone in need we will close the line at the 5,000th family.”
People certainly turned out as well, with local news reporting that the first car in line had been waiting since 3pm the day before the event. The event was held as a drive-through system in order to keep people safe and socially distant during Covid-19. Attendees were also required to wear face masks at all times. Overall it seems the event went off smoothly, with the studio giving out all of their stock, and no major issues occurring, save for the traffic caused by the demand.
Tyler Perry is a man who does it all: acting, writing, producing, directing and more. Once upon a time he was most recognizable as the actor and director of the Madea films where he dressed and acted as the titular character herself. These days however he’s likely better known for his work as a director and producer of soap-operas and dramatic films, as well as for his charitable giving. He’s done a lot for his community in Atlanta and also had one of the first studios to find a safe way to continue work during the pandemic. Variety even named him Showman of the Year for his efforts to help get production started safely and his continuing charitable work.
When asked about these accomplishments, Perry has remarked: “Just to try and use what I’ve been given — this platform [and] the gifts that I’ve managed to have — to celebrate and encourage and lift other people, that feels pretty awesome.” But according to him, it’s also about setting a positive example for Black and Brown children who grew up facing adversity like him: “Growing up, for me the only people that were doing well were the pimps and the preacher. And now to be able to set an example for kids that there are other options outside of sports and what everybody tells you — ‘These are the only things you can do’ — [is important]. You can be CEO; you can run a studio; you can use everything you have to help someone else.”
