It seems that since the release of Rockstar Games’ GTA 5 in 2013, rumors and leaks about Grand Theft Auto 6 have been making a regular appearance. Nearly every other month, there is GTA 6 release date news, either through a retailer slip-up, leaked financial documents, or fans spotting cryptic messages in previous games that they swear provide clues to GTA 6’s imminent release.
Now, a trailer for a new GTA Online update has been targeted as holding a potential teaser by Rockstar about Grand Theft Auto 6. The trailer advertises the biggest update yet for GTA Online, adding a new heist and an entirely new location. What caught fans’ eyes, however, were the GPC coordinates that appeared in the video. When plugged into Google Maps, these coordinates point to a dirt road somewhere in the woods of the US state of Virginia.
Zooming out and viewing the designated area on the map from an eagle’s eye view will reveal a winding road in the shape of the Roman numeral “VI,” or 6. Predictably, a few GTA fans eager for news regarding the next installment in the franchise were quick to jump on this as a possible reference for GTA 6.
If this were indeed a teaser planted by Rockstar for GTA 6, it’s unclear what purpose it serves. While it might be a clue that the next game will be set in Virginia, this seems unlikely. Back in August, a Reddit user going by the name of cmputerguy uncovered the news that the owner of Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, had registered two domain names: gtavi and gtavicecityonline. This has led to a widespread belief that GTA 6 will revisit Vice City, the setting for 2002’s GTA: Vice City.
This isn’t the first time GTA fans have zeroed in on “clues” hidden in trailers for other games either, and these have usually quickly been debunked. In October, many players became convinced that the setting for GTA 6 would be an island in South America. A former Take-Two Interactive employee leaked a photo of another worker’s laptop that had an image of an island on the screen. Sleuths then went on a hunt to look for corroboration of the leak and found postcards depicting tropical locales in a certain strip club in GTA 5. However, the images on these postcards were later revealed to be stock images easily found online.
Grand Theft Auto 6 has yet to be announced, but is rumored to be in development.
