Echo Fighters That Need to Come to Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Since Super Smash Bros. for Wii U launched back in 2014, fans of the series have been wondering which new fighters could come to the longtime series next in the form of downloadable content. And with Super Smash Bros Ultimates Fighters Pass 2 still incomplete, players continue to debate which fighters are left to come to the Switch title.

But one thought that hasn’t come across as many fans is the idea of brand new echo fighters, in the form of additional downloadable content apart from the game’s Fighter Passes. Only seven echo fighters currently exist in the game, so there’s certainly plenty of room for more. Here are just some ideas for new echo fighters that Nintendo could add into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the form of downloadable content.

The Donkey Kong Country series has always felt somewhat underrepresented in the Super Smash Bros series, with King K. Rool finally coming to Ultimate as the third representative for the classic 2D platformer series. It’s surprising that Dixie Kong has yet to appear as a playable fighter, and seems like the perfect echo fighter for Diddy Kong considering that the two characters are very similar in size and speed. Only small changes would have to be made, like their main attacks and Dixie’s hovering ability. This feels like a perfect echo fighter, and it’s honestly surprising that Nintendo hasn’t already done it.

Sonic the Hedgehog has served as Sega’s gaming mascot for the better part of the past three decades. The character served as Mario’s main rival during the 90s and has since become a mainstay fighter in the Super Smash Bros series. Because of this, it feels like Sonic deserves an echo fighter. While many fans will argue that Shadow the Hedgehog would fit more as Sonic’s echo, Tails is a more iconic and classic character. First introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Tails is the player 2 for Sonic and is arguably the second-most-recognizable character from the series. Tails’ moveset is slightly different from Sonic’s, but he would work just fine as an echo. With other third party characters like Ryu and Simon already given echos, giving Sonic one feels like a no-brainer.

Speaking of third party characters, Pac-Man could easily get an echo as well in the form of Ms. Pac-Man. She is similar to Pac-Man in nearly every way apart from looks, so this fighter would be easier than some to cook up. Simple changes like changing her move speed and attack power from Pac-Man could make Ms. Pac-Man into a different enough character to warrant her inclusion, and with this year being Pac-Man‘s 40th anniversary, an inclusion of an echo fighter for him feels all the more warranted.

With the inclusion of Piranha Plant as a playable fighter, this opens up the possibility for nearly any Mario enemy to show up in Super Smash Bros Ulitmate as a future fighter. And looking through the roster of Mario enemies, few feel more deserving than Birdo, who’s one of the oldest of Mario’s enemies, first appearing in Super Mario Bros. 2. The character has appeared alongside Yoshi many times in spin-off Mario titles, such as Mario Kart: Double Dash and Mario Tennis: Power Tour as Yoshi’s partner of choice. Because of this, Birdo would feel quite natural as Yoshi’s echo fighter in Ultimate. The characters are nearly identical in size and could have mostly the same moves, apart from Yoshi’s main tongue attack which could be swapped out for something different.

Donkey Kong is Nintendo’s oldest character, and as such, if feels like he should have his own echo fighter. As to which Kong fits best as his echo is debatable, but Funky Kong would probably be the most fun to see show up as a fighter for Smash Bros. Funky Kong previously showed up as a playable character for the Switch version of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and was even a playable racer in Mario Kart Wii, so his addition doesn’t feel too outlandish. As to how his moveset would translate to Donkey Kong’s, Nintendo might have to make a few tweaks but it overall seems like it could be doable. Funky Kong is arguably one of the most fun Kong member, so it could be interesting to see him show up in the Super Smash Bros. franchise.

Since the release of Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U, the character of Bayonetta has become somewhat synonymous with Nintendo’s brand. Becoming a playable fighter for Super Smash Bros for Wii U and the announcement of Bayonetta 3 as a Switch exclusive has only further solidified the witch as a Nintendo mainstay, so the addition of Jeanna as an echo fighter for her would only seem natural. Jeanna is Bayonetta’s sister, and shares a nearly identical moveset to her so it would be quite easily to add her into the game. Her addition could also help promote Bayonetta 3, which is set to release on the Switch at some point.

Not all Nintendo fans maybe realize that Link actually has a female counterpart, called Linkle. This non-canon Legend of Zelda character was introduced in Hyrule Warriors, as a part of additional DLC for the original Wii U game but is was since included in both the 3DS and Switch versions of the game, and is one of the most interesting side characters to come from the spin-off game. With the release of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Linkle could serve as a representative for the spin-off Zelda series and even tie into a Hyrule Warriors stage. Other than being a female counterpart to Link, Linkle is nearly identical to him so her inclusion as an echo would be fairly straight-forward, and it could help add to the somewhat small selection of female fighters.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.
