Dreamworks Animation’s Boss Baby franchise continues with a sequel to the animated feature that launched the series in 2017. Now, the studio has released the official trailer for the sequel in which Alec Baldwin’s Ted Templeton Jr. faces off against an army of ninja babies.
Loosely based on the picture book of the same name by children’s author Marla Frazee, The Boss Baby centered on an imaginative seven-year-old boy named Tim Templeton who’s enjoyed being the sole recipient of his parent’s love and affection. However, the sudden arrival of a business suit-wearing infant, whom his parents claim to be their newborn child, upends Tim’s life when his brother becomes the center of his family’s attention. The relationship between the two ‘siblings’ takes an unexpected turn when Tim discovers his brother, who refers to himself as The Boss, can talk and is actually a spy sent on a mission to thwart the CEO of Puppy Co.’s plot to ensure puppies replaces babies in the war for parents’ love.
The first Boss Baby film concluded with The Boss returning to the Templeton family as a regular baby named Ted before jumping ahead to the future, where an adult Tim had been recounting the story of his brother’s arrival to his own daughter Tabitha, who realizes that her infant sister Tina is also a Boss Baby. Now, Dreamworks is set to pick up where The Boss Baby left off with a sequel in which Tina brings the adult Templeton brothers, who have drifted apart in their adult years, back together after confirming she’s a member of the BabyCorp organization. Using a newly developed formula to transform Tim and Ted back into babies, Tina recruits the duo on a mission to stop an evil genius’s plan to create evil babies and unexpectedly helps them re-evaluate their relationship.
The Boss Baby franchise also includes an animated television series that debuted on Netflix in 2018. Titled The Boss Baby: Back in Business and featuring an entirely different voice cast, the series follows Ted as he tries to balance his work life at BabyCorp and his personal life with some help from Tim. The fourth season premiered on Netflix on November 17, 2020.
As absurd as the entire franchise may seem, the first film did well for itself both commercially and during the awards season of 2017. In addition to grossing a worldwide total of $528 million, The Boss Baby earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature, losing out to Pixar’s Coco.
The Boss Baby: Family Business is scheduled to be released in theaters 0n March 26, 2021.
