Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch Will Break Existing Saves | Game Rant

Generally-speaking, fans knew what they were getting into when they jumped into Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian Studios made it clear that the long-awaited sequel’s early access launch would be early indeed, and that it would be changing a lot in the process of being fleshed out for a full release. That hasn’t stopped most players from enjoying what Baldur’s Gate 3 has offered so far, but unfortunately, Larian has confirmed that development has gotten to the point that upcoming updates will no longer be compatible with current save files.

Worse yet, this will happen soon. In a developer update today, Larian confirmed that the third of Baldur’s Gate 3’s major patches is “just around the corner” and will introduce the first changes to the game’s story. As such, once players download patch 3, everything they’ve done in the current version of the game will be gone.

Not everyone will want to start from scratch, though, and the good news is that Larian is providing them with a way to hold onto their saves. Ahead of patch 3, the developer has introduced a secondary branch of the game that preserves the current build. Players can access this now by right-clicking the game in the Steam library, selecting “Properties,” then “Betas,” and finally “patch2.” Following these steps will allow players to continue with the characters they’ve been building up throughout Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3 even after patch 3 comes out. Unfortunately, this feature isn’t available on Stadia for the time being.

For anyone who’s uncertain about updating to patch 3 or not, Larian recommends disabling automatic updates by going into the “Updates” tab in the Properties menu and selecting “only update the game when I launch it” in the drop-down menu. However, players who have already decided to stick with Baldur’s Gate 3 as it is right now can opt into the secondary branch now, that way their saves are already secured when patch 3 eventually releases.

It’s little hassles like these that show why Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access might not be for everyone, since, first and foremost, Larian is focused on figuring out what works and what doesn’t about its role-playing mechanics and changing things up accordingly. While this will mean more upheaval for players than in a full release, it’s nice that Larian is giving them the option to hold off on jumping into future patches until they’re ready to start fresh.

“We know that having to switch branches may be annoying, but this is part of early access,” the developer wrote. “All the feedback we’ve been gathering from your adventures and posts will go right into these patches, so next time you play it’ll feel like an experience you’ve helped to create.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available in early access for PC and Stadia.
