Pokemon GO has had a big month so far and things aren’t slowing down as December gets closer. The week of November 30 marks the beginning of the GO Beyond update era and that means there are some major changes coming to the mobile AR game. Before that update, and the Season of Celebration, arrive, all of the current events and tests should likely wrap up, but there is one special limited time feature that just keeps getting extended…
Extended distance trading tests have been going on nearly all month in Pokemon GO and players have had to opportunity to clear out their local special and lucky trades without actually having to meet up with friends in person. The test was scheduled to end last week, but Niantic surprised players by extending it another week and increasing the distance that players can trade from. In yet another surprising turn, Niantic did the same thing yesterday when the test was scheduled to come to an end.
Now players have until November 30 at 1pm PST to continue distance trading in the mobile AR game. The latest reports are indication that the current test seems to have a limit of up to 40 or 5km, which comes out to around a max of a little over 30 miles. Considering that the Season of Celebration and the GO Beyond update kick off on the week of November 30, it seems very likely that the test will actually come to an end on this third and possibly final deadline.
Although some players have been hoping that the change may become permanent, Niantic has been pretty clear that the current plan is to use distance trading as a special feature for select events. During a recent press event with Niantic, the team described this as a technical test, which was laying the groundwork for use in future events.
Hanging on to a feature this powerful to bring out just for special events certainly makes sense, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see it make an appearance during many events over the winter months as stay-at-home orders return in some states and cities and players aren’t able to gather in person as often.
As trainers continue working through these amazing events and waiting for the GO Beyond update to officially arrive, they may want to keep hunting down the best Unova Pokemon in the game if improving their Battle Raid rosters and completing their Pokedex is their primary goal. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
