Star Citizen Opens New Game Studio to Develop Star Systems and Worlds

The development of Star Citizen remains a complicated story. Years after the space MMO’s development started, the project continues to grow in size and scale. The latest example comes in the form of a new studio joining Star Citizen‘s development. It’s not a new Cloud Imperium Games studio, however, it’s a new subsidiary of Turbulent, one of several partner studios helping to co-develop Star Citizen.

Turbulent made the announcement of its expansion recently, confirming the opening of a new studio in Montreal that will focus on work related to Star Citizen. Explicitly, Turbulent says that the new studio will be focused on “building worlds” for Star Citizen‘s persistent universe. Turbulent in general is responsible for developing “new tools” in order to make creating worlds and features faster. It’s also apparently responsible for building entirely “new star systems for Star Citizen,” which is clearly a big task.

Considering the size of the task, it’s no surprise that Turbulent is expanding with this new studio. Turbulent plans to rapidly grow the studio in order to meet expectations, up to 100 developers as needed. That’s not a gargantuan studio size, by any means, but it’s certainly big enough to create its own major games if it was so inclined. These star systems are possibly going to be quite robust.

There’s a dearth of information that’s not unexpected surrounding Star Citizen-related news. To say the new studio will focus on building worlds is one thing, but what that means in the context of Star Citizen‘s development and overall content output is something else entirely. That Star Citizen is being built is something interested gamers have been hearing for years and development keeps expanding, but expansion doesn’t mean tangible results for most players.

With that in mind, Star Citizen remains in an alpha state, in which Cloud Imperium Games and its partner studios continue to work on all aspects of the game. Star Citizen development continues to be well-funded, so it’s just a matter of time before that work comes to fruition.

For the time being, what’s available to play from Star Citizen is limited to several modules. Arena Commander is a dogfighting and racing module, Star Marine is an FPS, Area18 is a cityscape with shopping, and Hangar is a place for a player’s ships to be stored. Finally, the Persistent Universe is what Cloud Imperium calls the module that brings everything together into one game, but everything remains in development.
