The Metro series went in a new direction with Metro Exodus and its massive, open world-like locations, and it seems like developer 4A Games is looking to evolve the series even further with the next entry in the post-apocalyptic universe. In a post celebrating the studio’s 10-year anniversary, a Metro multiplayer game has been confirmed to be in development.
4A Games was recently acquired by THQ Nordic’s parent group, with plans in place to continue the Metro series as well as kick off new franchises. As it turns out, the Metro series will be going in a new direction, but that does not mean that singleplayer will not be abandoned. Before detailing the multiplayer project, 4A Games ensured that the team is still “committed to delivering a great story driven single player experience” as well, as that is “what the Metro series is founded on.”
The team went on to say that, while another fully single-player Metro offering is very much on the way, multiplayer has always “been an ambition for 4A Games” and is something that it can finally do due to a partnership with Saber Interactive. The studio acknowledges that “some of our fans have concerns whenever they hear multiplayer mentioned,” with 4A Games tackling the multiplayer Metro game’s development head on as an attempt to quell any doubts or feats.
The studio ensures fans that multiplayer will not feel tacked-on or rushed when it arrives, and that it will make sense within the Metro universe as well. The mode will keep the same tone as the single-player games inspired by the Metro book series, and 4A Games says that it will make sure that the multiplayer Metro project is “not to the detriment of our single-player ambitions.” They also went on to say that nothing is set in stone regarding the multiplayer game’s release.
As said within the post, there is no guarantee that the next Metro game will be multiplayer only. Likewise, the team says that it is equally unclear if “the next game will have single and multi-player in the same package.” Whether the next Metro games separate multiplayer and single-player is unclear for 4A Games at this time, so fans will have to remain patient and wait on more details regarding the next release in the horror-filled Metro universe.
The final bit of information in the post confirms that the next Metro games will be available on PC and next-gen consoles, something that makes sense regarding 4A Games’ recent comments on PS5’s power. While no details regarding the actual gameplay and genre of the mode are shared in the post, 4A Games seems to be taking a thoughtful and careful approach with the Metro multiplayer game.
A new Metro game is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
