Wipeout Contestant Dies After Completing Obstacle Course

The news was recently confirmed by L.A. County Officials: 38-year-old Michael Paredes died soon after completing an obstacle course on the popular game-show Wipeout. The show typically requires contestants to complete a series of physical challenges in the form of an obstacle course where falling off means landing in the cold water below. On November 18th Paredes participated in production and completed one of the show’s courses, only to require medical attention due to cardiac arrest shortly afterward. From there he was transported to the hospital, and his death was later reported by TMZ.

While the autopsy is still pending, it would seem that the stress of the course triggered an unfortunate medical emergency. Contestants for Wipeout are given medical screenings before they are allowed to participate, and Paredes did reportedly receive the exam as well. It is currently unknown whether the tragic death of Paredes was due to something missed during the screening, or if there was some unknown factor at play.

A spokesperson for TBS, which airs the show made a short statement acknowledging the death of Paredes: “We are devastated to have learned of his passing and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family.” Endemol Shine, which produces the show, also offered a statement to the family: “We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and our thoughts are with them at this time.” The cast and crew of the show will be taking an expected hiatus for the Thanksgiving holiday, with production expected to resume shortly afterward.

This is an unfortunate start to the show, which is being rebooted after having been cancelled back in 2014. Back in April TBS had announced that the show would be returning with new hosts John Cena and Nicole Byer, though no premiere date has been set for the revival as of yet. Hopefully this inspires the production to re-evaluate their health screenings and see if anything could be done to prevent any similar events happening as the show goes forward. In the meantime the primary concern is for the family of Paredes, and hopefully they are given the care and assistance they need during this difficult time.
