It seems a lot of gamers are still hungry for the kind of farming game experience that Stardew Valley and similar titles have popularized in recent years, because it’s been announced that total worldwide shipments and digital sales of Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin have surpassed 500,000 copies.
As the numbers show, indie studio Edelweiss’ charming mix of 3D rice farming simulation and side-scrolling action-RPG gameplay has amassed quite a following since it came out just sixteen days ago. The success of the game even led to a surge in publisher Marvelous Entertainment’s stocks, raising them so fast that the publisher actually had to temporarily freeze its prices as a result.
While the global haul so far is especially impressive for a game developed by just two people, Sakuna has also been doing particularly well in Japan. There, it came in third place on the latest weekly sales charts, putting it neck-and-neck with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. It goes to show much of a strong start the game is off to if it can compete with some of the biggest AAA titles currently available.
Better yet, this popularity is giving Edelweiss incentive to build upon the initial release. On a related note, Marvelous announced that a new update has been released for the PS4 version of Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, Version 1.05. In addition to adding multiple balance tweaks to the game’s stamina and fertilizer systems, it also addresses a data corruption issue that some players have reported.
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is available for PC, PS4, and Switch.
