With December approaching, Sony announces a slate of new games that will become available to the PlayStation Plus service for members to enjoy in the upcoming month. On top of the new PS Plus titles, the announcement reveals a new free online multiplayer weekend event for non-PlayStation Plus members to enjoy in mid-December.
According to Adam Michel, Sony’s senior manager of game services content, the event will allow non-PS Plus members to enjoy the online features of their PS4 and PS5 games for free. PlayStation gamers will be able to enjoy the full benefits of their games’ online modes without the PlayStation Plus service. However, it will only run in local time from midnight on Saturday, December 19 to December 20 at 11:59 pm.
Non-PS Plus users will not have access to any other services of the PlayStation subscription service and will only have a short period to make the most of this event during the winter season. Of course, the event will require gamers to have a solid internet connection and a PlayStation Network account to make it work. The promotional picture in the blog does have images of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Grand Theft Auto 5, and EA’s FIFA 21 as major examples.
However, the event doesn’t provide gamers with access to any PS Plus titles, so they will need to already own the games to use their online features. This also means non-PS Plus users won’t have access to the new PS Plus titles Sony announced for December. The wacky turn-based Worms Rumble, the high-octane open-world Just Cause 4, and the online shooter Rocket Arena will be available to PS Plus subscribers.
Sony has hosted free online multiplayer weekend events in the past for the PS4 with similar criteria for gamers not using the subscription service. The events were similarly part of an announcement for new PS Plus titles, just as this one id. A notable example was from August 8 – 9 when Fall Guys was added on to PS Plus that month. This falls in line with Sony’s plan for the PS Plus service to have include backward compatible PS4 games, and cycling in PS5 exclusives, as well as the recent PS5 game Bugsnax, which is part of the November 2020 offering.
When it comes to free online multiplayer weekend events, Sony is keeping things the same for the subscription service. Gamers without the PS Plus service will have something to look forward to in December before Christmas arrives.
