In hopes to avoid the craziness of the next-gen launch window, Sword of the Necromancer is being delayed. The dungeon-crawling action role-playing game had previously been planned for a December 10, 2020 release date, but now it will arrive on January 28, 2021.
Sword of the Necromancer started out as a crowdfunded title, looking to be a successful Kickstarter game. Using a stylish hand-drawn animation approach, Sword of the Necromancer is an action-RPG that uses dungeon crawling and roguelike elements. It is headed to all major platforms, including PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
The extra time in development will allow developer Grimorio of Games to polish up the experience a bit more. The team, and publisher JanduSoft S.L, could have been setting itself up for failure with so many high profile games in November and December to compete against, including Cyberpunk 2077, which is finally releasing with no more delays. Grimorio of Games also released another Dev Diary for the game, this one highlighting the art and music, helping to build the excitement.
As much as we want to get Sword of the Necromancer into the hands of the players, it is more important that the game meets our vision first. Releasing in January 2021, allows us to refine the game experience further and also avoid the craziness of the next-gen consoles launch window. Rest assured that the final product will be worth the wait.
Sword of the Necromancer has the opportunity to be an instant classic dungeon crawler RPG. The monster-summoning elements look to bring a unique experience to the mix. It could have easily been buried in the holiday rush and next-gen insanity, so the move to hold the game back until January may be wise. By the time it releases, some of the shine of 2020’s biggest games will have naturally dulled, and Sword of the Necromancer could be a nice pickup for those looking for their next game.
Sword of the Necromancer is headed to Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on January 28, 2021.
