Wonder Woman 1984 Director Confirms Amazon Spin-Off Timeframe

Warner Bros.’s plans for the future of the DC Extended Universe include the development of Wonder Woman spin-off centered on Amazons of Themyscira. Now, Patty Jenkins has confirmed when the spin-off will take place and how the film is tied to the overarching plan for the Wonder Woman franchise.

Jenkins first announced that she and Warner Bros. were considering a Wonder Woman spin-off at CCXP 2019 in Brazil. Although no further details were provided at the time, Jenkins has since stated that she does not intend to direct the spin-off and would instead serve as a producer on the project.

While the spin-off would clearly center on the race of warrior women whom Diana lived with on the island of Themyscira, fans were uncertain if the project would be a prequel to the first Wonder Woman film or if it would coincide with the events if the DC heroine’s cinematic adventures. “The events of this story take place after Diana leaves Themyscira, the Island of the Amazons, and there are some twists and turns linked to what will happen between Wonder Woman 1984 and Wonder Woman 3,” Jenkins confirmed in a recent interview with Geek Magazine. However, the filmmaker reminded fans that the spin-off is still in the development stage, adding, “the production of the project has not yet officially started, but I hope we get it because I love this story.” Jenkins previously noted that she developed the story for the spin-off with former President and Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment Geoff Johns before taking the concept to Warner Bros.

The Amazons are not the only supporting characters in the DCEU franchise who may end up landing their own spin-off. Warner Bros. has already hired writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to pen the screenplay for a film centered on the Trench, the sea creatures who attacked Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry and Amber Heard’s Mera during their search for the Trident of Atlan in the first Aquaman film. James Wan, who directed Aquaman and will serve as a producer on the spin-off, previously stated that the Trench film will be more a horror feature compared to most superhero projects.

At this point though, most fans are likely just interested in finally being able to watch Wonder Woman 1984. Warner Bros. recently settled on a simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max release in the United States after the DC sequel had already been delayed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As for countries without HBO Max, Warner Bros. plans to gradually release Wonder Woman 1984 theatrically in international markets starting on December 16. Unfortunately, this still leaves a few options for those who would prefer to avoid theaters during the second wave of the pandemic or live in areas where theaters are closed.

Wonder Woman 1984 will be released in the United States in theaters and on HBO Max on December 25, 2020.
