Bungie CEO Says New Projects Have Been in Development Since 2017

Many of Bungie‘s biggest fans questioned the studio’s decision to continue supporting Destiny 2 following its separation from Activision in 2019. Some expected Bungie to release a different game apart from Activision’s influence, whether that be Destiny 3 or something entirely new. It turns out those fans weren’t far off, as it turns out Bungie started work on new projects as far back as 2017.

Speaking with Metro, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons discussed how splitting from Activision allowed the company to not just work on Destiny 2 the way Bungie wanted, but also “bring new titles to bear with that secret sauce of what a Bungie game is.” When asked to elaborate, Parsons said he, Jason and Jonny Ebbert, as well as Zach Russel began work on what Parsons calls “incubations” about three years ago. Bungie has spent the years since building out the teams behind these projects.

When Parsons says incubations, he’s not talking about individual games directly. They may come out with games on the other side, because the incubations have their own projects, but Parsons prefers this terminology to keep the focus on building development teams. Parsons said Bungie wants to “incubate the potential for new titles,” as well as “new and amazing talent.” One example he cites is Bungie designer M.E. Chung, who helped create Destiny‘s social systems, and is now working on one of these incubation projects.

In other words, Bungie is working on multiple projects and has been for years. Some of them may be Destiny-related, but others may not be. It isn’t clear if these incubations are in any kind of pre-production stage, though after three years some progress has likely been made. Parsons isn’t saying to expect more information on these projects in the near future, however.

In 2019, after Bungie separated from Activision, the company said it wanted to release a non-Destiny game by 2025. This was when Bungie was still figuring out what to do with Destiny, so who knows how much has changed since then, but Bungie could have been referring to these incubations at the time.

For the time being, Bungie’s focus clearly remains on Destiny. Destiny 2‘s most recent expansion, Beyond Light, just launched, and with it a new round of Seasons are beginning that should stretch through the next year. However, it’s clear now that Destiny isn’t all that Bungie is working on. It may be some time before fans find out what else is in the works, but Bungie is clearly confident in its plans for the future.
