It is no secret that the launch of the PlayStation 5 several weeks ago was a major triumph for Sony. Shortly after the console’s release, Sony released a statement saying that the PS5’s launch is the company’s biggest ever and demand is unprecedented. To that point, it’s almost impossible to find a PS5 at retail stores, which is not at all surprising given the massive hype surrounding its launch.
Last week, some major retailers in the US gave players another chance to pick up the PS5 as part of their Black Friday sales. As expected, the second wave PlayStation 5 consoles quickly flew off shelves (both in-store and digital), leaving more people unable to take home the next-generation console. A few days ago, the hashtag #NotaPS5 started to trend on Twitter in response to a post by Gamestop. Immediately after Black Friday ended, GameStop innocently asked players what they were able to purchase during the sale, and the #NotaPS5 joke started making the rounds on Twitter.
It is worth noting that almost all of the #NotaPS5 posts were harmless and were probably posted in frustration. During Black Friday, some die-hard customers queued outside of stores in hopes of taking home the console, while others were patiently glued to their computers, waiting for the PS5 to be available in online storefronts. Unfortunately, the PS5 stocks available during Black Friday were minimal and customers were forced to compete with scalpers to try and secure a console.
A scalper group based in the UK even bragged about their next-generation console stock, saying that their team secured over 2,500 PS5 units, which angered fans who were unable to get one. There were also reports from people who were able to secure a PS5 online only to find out that the delivery drivers handling their consoles were stealing them, prompting huge companies like Amazon to take swift action.
In a statement released by Sony, it revealed that the company is aware of the massive shortage of PS5 consoles. While Sony is thankful for the continuous patronage of its loyal fanbase, President and CEO Jim Ryan reassures fans who could not get the console that more PS5s are on the way by the end of 2020.
