CD Projekt Red has revealed more information about the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer component that’s due to arrive sometime after the main game’s launch.
Joint CEO at CD Projekt Red, Adam Kicinski, explained during the studio’s latest earnings briefing that calling the multiplayer facet of the game a ‘mode’ is, in fact, something of a misnomer.
According to Kicinski, CD Projekt Red is actually viewing multiplayer more as a ‘standalone product’.
“So, first, we don’t call it modes,” Kicinski stated during an earnings call transcribed by Seeking Alpha. “It’s a separate dedicated production, a big production. We think about it as a standalone product.”
The multiplayer part of the game will be connected to the single-player release, but will operate individually – with a separate team working to provide on-going content for the multiplayer mode. We know that the multiplayer side started out as concept exploration and later entered into full development.
The fact that you haven’t heard anything about the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer just yet is also by design, with the studio wanting to keep quiet about the mode until people have had a chance to enjoy what the main game has to offer.
We’ve previously heard that the multiplayer portion of the game is unlikely to arrive in 2021, so expect the news to drip through quite slowly on this one.
All in all, it sounds fairly similar to what Rockstar does with Red Dead Online and GTA Online, but we’ll have to wait until we see the game in action before we draw any direct comparisons.
Kicinski says we can expect to hear more about Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer sometime during Q1 2021.
Cyberpunk 2077 is out December 10 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Stadia, and CD Projekt Red has promised (again) not to delay the game any further.
The post Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer isn’t just a mode, it’s a ‘standalone product’ appeared first on VG247.
