YouTuber Dr Disrespect, who was banned from Twitch this June, is no stranger to making controversial comments regarding the video game industry in general. The streamer recently criticized players who are into mobile games after revealing his expensive PC gaming rig. Naturally, the streamer’s views on mobile gaming ruffled some feathers, resulting in him being challenged to a 1v1 Call of Duty: Mobile match with $100,000 at stake.
Dr Disrespect recently shared his opinion on how the video game industry should hand out awards to developers. The streamer believes that video game awards shows should focus on “things that really matter,” and accolades should be given to specific individuals behind these games rather than the broader project. In a tweet yesterday, he shared some examples of what awards should be, such as Best Multiplayer Map design, Best Weapon Skin Design, Best Single Player Level, and more.
Interestingly, Dr Disrespect ended his tweet saying, “It’s settled….Next year,” which suggests that the streamer will be taking matters into his own hands by hosting his own awards show in 2021. At the moment, it is unclear whether or not the banned Twitch streamer is serious. Still, based on his tweet, it is apparent that he is committed to giving out recognition to specific elements of a game that players care about.
In a follow-up remark, Dr Disrespect said that the purpose of his awards show will be to “Reward the true creatives in the industry.” Judging from the comments that his tweet received, it appears that most of Dr Disrespect’s followers are in agreement with his views about video game awards shows. One fan commented that it would be nice to see each detail of a game closely examined and recognized, rather than projects at a whole. At the same time, another said that the gaming industry would probably be better if it paid attention to the ideas of Dr Disrespect.
It is worth noting that The Game Awards, which is one of the biggest award shows in the industry, is taking place next week. While the show recognizes multiple categories for its accolades, it does not include any specific elements mentioned by Dr Disrespect. For this year, The Game Awards nominees for Game of the Year are Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Hades, Ghost of Tsushima, DOOM Eternal, and The Last of Us 2. The Game Awards will be held virtually on December 10, 2020.
