Cosplayers represent a very creative part of many gaming and show fanbases, and the Pokemon franchise has plenty of amazing content creators. One cosplayer showed off a spin on one of the most visually interesting Pokemon introduced in Pokemon Sun and Moon, the Pikachu imitator Mimikyu.
The Alola region from Pokemon Sun and Moon brought a lot of new locations, experiences, and monsters for Pokemon fans to enjoy, and one such creature is the Ghost/Fairy type Mimikyu. The Fairy type was still fairly new to the franchise when Sun and Moon came around, as it had only appeared a generation before in-game, and many people were still figuring how best to incorporate the type into their teams. Mimikyu’s creepy backstory exemplifies the Ghost type, although it does naturally learn some Fairy-type moves.
Marissa Dattoli is a musician and cosplayer, and has shared cosplays from other fandoms on her social media, including an Akatsuki robe from Naruto and a Princess Zelda cosplay from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Her cosplays are creative and often include her own personal spin, which she also exemplifies in how she poses and frames her pictures.
Although some Mimikyu cosplays lean more into the creepy aspect of the Pokemon, Dattoli’s outfit is a lot more centered around the cuteness and charm of a monster that many people view as misunderstood. The cosplay is made up of a yellow jacket with a hood resembling the Pokemon’s face, with its Pikachu-like ears and swirly eyes. In the photo, she wears this over a black skirt and shoes.
According to its Pokedex entries in Pokemon Sun and Moon, Mimikyu masks its true appearance, which is supposed to be extremely shocking. However, later Pokedex entries paint it as misunderstood and lonely, although its Z-Move in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is called Let’s Snuggle Forever, which many fans view as incredibly creepy, given that it deals a ton of damage to whoever it’s inflicted on.
Of course, not every cosplay has to lean into less pleasant elements of its subject, and Dattoli’s decision to represent a cuter side of a Pokemon usually portrayed as creepy is a valid decision for a fan creator to make. She does acknowledge Mimikyu’s creepy past in the picture’s comment, but as some of the comments pointed out, seeing Dattoli under Mimikyu’s covering as opposed to what its Pokedex entry hints at would be a huge relief.
Pokemon Sun and Moon are available on the Nintendo 3DS.
