A New York resident has found out about the near-total loss of his collection of video games this week. The entire collection of video games thrown out is estimated to be at least $500,000 in value.
An employee of New York City-based gaming store J&L Game, the unfortunate collector took to the internet to post his reaction to the situation on social media. The gamer had been storing his video games at his old family home, with a vast selection of titles and consoles that would’ve rivaled WWE Wrestler Asuka’s massive collection.
The employee joked in a since-deleted thread on Twitter, “People are gonna die. I just found out my mom a few years ago threw out ALL my PS1 games. 500+ games half still sealed. I am going to kill somebody.”According to the thread, since checking the collection two years ago, there have been “well over $500K worth of games” thrown out. In addition to those rare classic PlayStation games being tossed, the collector’s mom also decided to get rid of some rare, vintage consoles. These include the Famicom, Super Famicom, Atari systems, the ultra-rare NeoGeo AES, and more. The less-than-happy son says he’s lost “basically every system and game” that was left in storage at his parent’s house.
To make matters worse, the valuable-tossing didn’t end at just video game stuff. Plenty of non-gaming merchandise was also part of the (apparently massive) clean-out’s collateral damage. The mom tossed a ton of music gear, including two Marshall amps, 14 effects pedals, and a drum kit. Further tweets from the gamer reveal that his rare Magic: The Gathering cards and comic book collection have also been claimed by the clean-out. Later on, the gamer took to Twitter once again, except this time to apologize for “losing control. I’m out for the night.”
It is extremely unfortunate that this person lost thousands in all sorts of gaming software and hardware. However, better communication between him and his mother could’ve prevented this video game super fan’s collection from ending up in the trash. It is a bit weird that the tweets are coming from what seems to be a business-oriented Twitter handle. In addition, it’s odd that he’s just realizing it now, when the games have apparently been thrown out for years. The total actual value of the lost portion of the video game collection remains unclear.
Losing some of the rarest game consoles and games, especially a lifelong collection, is surely a heartbreaking situation for any gamer. If anybody doubts an old gaming collection’s half-million estimate, a copy of Super Mario Bros 3 just sold for $153,000. Maybe now, he’ll keep closer tabs on his collection of video games in the future. Hopefully what’s left of the merch can find a safer location, maybe one that is far away from his mom.
