God of War Art Director Reimagines Chrono Trigger as Modern Game

As more remakes are continuously announced and released like the PlayStation 5’s recent Demon’s Souls, there is a growing desire from numerous fanbases to have their favorite title get a full rework. While most gamers won’t get the dream of a full remake for classic titles, there are still artists out there willing to show what could be possible through modern interpretations.

God of War Art Director Rafael Grassetti has made a name for himself as one of the artists to follow on social media. Beyond his position as Art Director at developer Sony Santa Monica, Grassetti has become known for using his incredible skills to recreate classic characters. In his most recent artistic effort, Grassetti has redone some of the JRPG genre’s most iconic heroes with a jaw dropping look.

Grassetti recently uploaded his rendition of Chrono from Chrono Trigger on his Instagram and it definitely has struck a chord with fans. The Chrono artwork displays an incredibly detailed look at the time hopping hero with his signature Akira Toriyama hairstyle impressively recreated. With the post amassing over 35,000 likes just two days after being posted, the responses are a mix of praise and disappointment. The latter is not due to the artwork itself, but a stark reminder that this style of a Chrono Trigger remake is unlikely to ever get made.

While most fans are besotted with Chrono, he is actually the first upload for Grassetti’s current Chrono Trigger project. Similar to Grassetti’s now famous realistic Smash Bros. renditions, this is just part of a much bigger collection. Not long after Grassetti stoked the flames of the Chrono Trigger fanbase, he uploaded the next two characters from the beloved JRPG. The first to follow the protagonist was the beloved anthropomorphic amphibian Knight, Frog, who oozes charm in his image. Following that, fans finally got a look at Robo who fully captures the steampunk magic of the original.

As most fans know, there are still four other party members yet to join Grassetti’s expansive portfolio with Lucca, Marle, Ayla, and even Magus missing. While it’s hard to say which Chrono Trigger character will get the spotlight next, fans won’t have to wait too long to find out. With each of the previous posts being just hours apart from release, it won’t take long until the next upload hits.

With Grassetti having the Chrono community enraptured by his merging of modern design with classic characters, it may just lead to more hope from a dedicated fanbase. With fans still quick to call Chrono Trigger the best Square RPG, there is always the very slim possibility the game gets the Final Fantasy 7 Remake treatment in the future.
