With massive sales numbers that are likely to continue on for some time to come, more people are experiencing Nintendo Switch updates than ever before. As such, any firmware changes made for the console are going to be noticed, such as one particularly distracting new button on the Nintendo Switch home screen.
The button in question is for Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo’s service for paid access to online games. Rather than the addition of Gameboy games or Nintendo 64 titles, which have been requested numerous times by fans, this addition for Nintendo Switch Online sees a button placed on the Switch’s home screen. While the UI addition is basically just an advertisement, fans are sharing their disappointment with the button’s design.
Twitter user @Scrxtchy began with praise for the other new additions that came with the Nintendo Switch firmware update. Alongside an addition that makes saved data management much easier and a “trending” section for players to keep an eye on their friends, the Nintendo Switch update added screenshot improvements that the Twitter user seems very fond of. However, their follow-up Tweet sharing that they “dislike how hard the NSO icon stands out” was just the tip of the iceberg for complaints.
Numerous Switch users complained about the Nintendo Switch Online button, such as user @RNGTime64 who commented that they “hate this NSO icon” because it is “basically an advertisement” and “the application serves no purpose.” Twitter user @Cibles_ felt the same, calling the button’s addition “forced and unnecessary.” While the Nintendo Switch Online portal is essentially the same as the PlayStation Plus section on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 UI, players have taken issue with its design more than anything else.
As multiple users pointed out, the red background clashes with the minimalistic grey buttons used in the rest of the UI. Though something meant to advertise a product catching the attention of players means it is doing its job, it is easy to understand why fans are upset about the big push for the already successful Nintendo Switch Online. With even users that are positive on the “clean” look of the Nintendo Switch Online portal mentioning how out of place it looks alongside the other home screen buttons, perhaps the rest of the UI could use an update to match.
Regardless, the many fans of Nintendo have made their voices heard regarding their annoyance with this latest Switch change. Whether they are heard or ignored remains to be seen, but it is clear that a lot of eyes have been fixated on one bright red button.
The Nintendo Switch is available now.
