Gunfire Games’ third-person action RPG Remnant: From the Ashes was a little underrated when it released in 2019, despite receiving praise from both critics and players. But the developer hasn’t finished with the game’s post-apocalyptic world filled with monstrous creatures just yet and recently unveiled the trailer for a prequel, Chronos: Before the Ashes.
Launched on December 1, 2020, Chronos: Before the Ashes offers a shorter playtime and therefore a smaller price tag than Remnant: From the Ashes. Categorized by Gunfire Games as an adventure game with RPG elements, Chronos takes place at an unspecified time before the events of Remnant and builds upon the dark fantasy elements, Souls-like gameplay, and intricate level designs of its big brother. It should be noted that it is a retooled version of the Chronos VR game that was released a few years ago.
In the game, the player embodies a young hero who delves into a foreboding and mysterious labyrinth to save his homeland from a great evil. While exploring, the player will grow in wisdom and strength, mastering a variety of weapons, powers, and abilities to help on his dangerous quest.
However, every time the hero dies, an exacting price is paid: one year of his life is lost. This aging mechanic adds a unique gameplay element to Chronos: Before the Ashes, requiring the player to adapt to the hero’s advancing age. While in the beginning, the player character is agile and quick, those who succumb frequently to the dangers of the labyrinth may have to rely more on magic than strength by the game’s end.
Chronos: Before the Ashes is currently available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
