Days Gone Director No Longer at Sony Bend Studio | Game Rant

As far as PlayStation exclusive games go, Days Gone is a bit of a curious case. Developed by Sony’s Bend Studio, the game let players explore a visually impressive, zombie-infested Oregon as a biker, though Days Gone reviews indicated a lukewarm reception from critics. However, it has found a solid niche of fans that have supported it since, leading to questions about a potential sequel among its supporters. That possibility is a bit muddier now, though, as Days Gone Writer and Director John Garvin is no longer with the studio.

On Twitter, Garvin shared that he hasn’t spoken about his departure for “various reasons” and that he hasn’t been with Bend Studio for over a year now. Instead, Garvin has been focusing on personal projects, like writing, painting, and publishing. Garvin went on to recount part of his two-decade history with the studio, writing and directing every game from Syphon Filter through Days Gone.

Garvin also thanked Days Gone Game Director Jeff Ross and the game’s fans for their support of the project. Interestingly,  Ross is also leaving Bend Studio at the end of the week, revealing the fact in his own Twitter thread. Ross stated that he was “proud of all the games” he made during his time with the studio, but that he’s looking forward to new challenges in the future. Ross went on to say that he’ll be moving to Chicago when the COVID-19 situation improves.

Bend Studio has a long, interesting history with PlayStation. Days Gone is the highest-profile game that the studio has crafted for PlayStation, though Bend Studio also created some of the notable PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita games ever released on the systems, namely Resistance: Retribution and Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

It’s not clear what’s next for Garvin or Ross, not to mention Bend Studio itself. With the PlayStation 5 now in the hands of gamers, Sony is undoubtedly looking towards the next generation of exclusive titles, and it seems likely that Bend Studio will be included in that fold. With a new generation of technology, there are countless possibilities for a Days Gone sequel. Senior developers at PlayStation studios tend to become faces for the entire brand, though, giving the next directors big shoes to fill.

Doubtlessly, this is a big shakeup for the studio, though that shouldn’t necessarily worry fans. There’s a lot of talent at Bend Studio, so the developer’s next project — whatever that might end up being — is an exciting prospect.

Days Gone is available now for PS4.
