CD Projekt Red Asks Gamers Not to Stream Cyberpunk 2077 Before Launch Day

After a long development cycle that included multiple delays, the highly-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 about a week away from its current December 10 release. Developer CD Projekt Red has been pushing the upcoming game quite a bit on social media, such as releasing a trailer focused on Cyberpunk 2077‘s photo mode, but it would apparently like to keep this marketing all to itself before launch in order to avoid spoilers getting out.

Early copies of Cyberpunk 2077 have likely been provided to content creators, but CD Projekt Red is apparently also concerned with spoilers from those who chance their way into owning the game early. The game’s official Twitter account posted a message “kindly” asking people not to stream, let’s play, or in any other way post significant content before December 9 at 3:00 a.m. PST – though it acknowledges it will be difficult to create a totally spoiler-free environment.

That being said, the ask is not entirely reliant on the honor system. The Twitter post suggests videos will be taken down prior to release, though it masquerades the threat by referencing it being the result of MAX-TAC, the Maximum Force Tactical Division of the police in Cyberpunk 2077.

All-and-all the post has a bit of tonal whiplash, going from “kindly ask” to threatening takedowns, and ultimately ending with a bit of morose humor suggesting there “might not be a tomorrow” given the way 2020 has played out due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and more. However, concerns about early spoilers are not unfounded given some leaks already occurred in November and Cyberpunk 2077 pre-orders far outpace any Witcher game the studio developed.

Despite its numerous delays and controversies surrounding CD Projekt Red’s crunch culture, excitement for the upcoming title is palpable as Cyberpunk 2077 approaches its release on everything but next-gen consoles. Many fans have been producing content related to the game for months, with one recreating Cyberpunk 2077‘s E3 2018 trailer in World of Warcraft.

For those who are interested in the universe around Cyberpunk 2077 but not necessarily the game itself, there are also other options available leading up to December 10. A bundle of Cyberpunk tabletop books worth $500 are available through Humble Bundle for just $15 over the next two weeks, which may offer up a good way to get acclimated with the world of CD Projekt Red’s anticipated title.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be available on December 10 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions releasing in 2021.
