The Nintendo Switch Version 11.0.0 update released on November 30, bringing a number of new features to the console as it approaches its fourth year on the market. The most prominent additions include a new way to share screenshots from the Switch, as well as a controversial icon to access the Nintendo Switch Online service.
However, the official patch notes released by Nintendo include a few other handy updates: A “trending” feature that pulls data from one’s friend list, the ability to prioritize which downloads happen first, and support for Brazilian Portuguese among them. The official Nintendo of America Twitter account highlighted something else today, as the Switch update added 12 new Mario profile icons to help celebrate Super Mario‘s 35th anniversary.
These icons represent games from throughout the plumber’s history, starting from Super Mario Bros. on the NES. The choices include Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy, as seen in the high-selling Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection, but go even further to include Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Odyssey. The only seemingly original icon features Mario climbing out of a green pipe, but stopping to rest on the lip with a smile for the audience.
Releasing new Mario profile icons and Super Mario 3D All-Stars are just a few of the many ways Nintendo has celebrated its iconic character’s anniversary. Other products like Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. and LEGO Super Mario sets have been put out. Though a few games are being removed from the eShop in March, it should be interesting to see what other Mario-themed content the Nintendo Switch gets in 2021.
