Readers likely know the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences via the various awards shows they host over the year. The Emmys is of course the biggest show the put on, but their are other various outings including the Daytime Emmys, the Sports Emmys, and other more specific shows. Of course the Coronavirus has made traditional in-person awards shows a tricky prospect, meaning doubts have been raised as to what things will look like going forward. As the pandemic and lockdowns continue across the United States the NATAS has announced that it intends to continue its plan of virtual awards shows for the foreseeable future.
The announcement was made this Tuesday, confirming that 2021 will feature a virtual showcases for the relevant shows. This decision will impact the Daytime Emmys, the Sports Emmys, News and Documentary Emmys, as well as the Technology and Engineering Emmys. These programs are all run by the New York based NATAS. The Primetime Emmys, which is the one most people are familiar with, are run by the West Coast-based Television Academy, which has yet to release any specific plans for 2021.
NATAS made it’s decision based on when vaccines may be available, and how close they could schedule 2021’s awards to the 2022 cycle without delaying the latter. President/CEO Adam Sharp explained their reasoning in a statement: “The current timetables articulated by manufacturers project mass availability of vaccinations for the entire U.S. population by mid-summer 2021, potentially permitting a return to more traditional in-person ceremonies later in the fall. However, we have determined that delaying our 2021 events to possibly allow for a compressed calendar of in-person Emmy ceremonies late in the year would result in unacceptable delays to our awards cycle for 2022.”
The ceremonies run by the New York organization typically happen mid-year, and widespread vaccination simply doesn’t seem to be likely at that point. Schedules and timetables for the virtual ceremonies are already publicly available, while the Primetime Emmy schedules are expected to come out within the next few weeks. Sharp’s statement remained optimistic however, reading: “Despite being born of unintended necessity, our 2020 ceremonies proved to be among our best. We hope to build on this creative success in making the 2021 virtual gatherings even more inclusive and engaging celebrations of excellence.”
