Mass Effect 2 is trending on Twitter, but surprisingly, it doesn’t have anything to do with the remastered trilogy, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, releasing next year.
For some, it’s hard to believe that 2010 was an entire decade ago, but it was an excellent year for gaming. The community was delivered titles that are still considered masterpieces and see playtime from gamers still today, such as Red Dead Redemption, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, BioShock 2, and Fallout: New Vegas. Twitter user Shinobi602, known for his work at Wushu Studios and active participation in the gaming community, asked the hivemind, “What was your favorite game from 2010?”
But among all of these amazing games, many of which are still considered the favorites of gamers, one title stands out among the rest and is trending on Twitter: Mass Effect 2. So many users have responded with the sequel space opera as an answer that it’s landed itself on Twitter’s What’s Happening list. One user responded to Shinobi’s tweet saying, “There are so many incredible titles here, but my personal fav?” with a gif of the Illusive Man attached, as many other users have also responded with.
It’s not surprising to see Mass Effect 2 at the top of many gamers’ lists of the best game to come out of 2010; it received several Game of the Year awards for its excellent writing, characters, and soundtrack. With Mass Effect making a solid landing in the industry for its creative take on the space genre and interactive storytelling, its sequel delivered a promising follow-up. The game even finds itself on Wikipedia’s list of video games considered to be the best of all time, alongside Red Dead Redemption, who many also commented on Shinobi’s tweet to be their favorite along with gifs of John Marston.
This reception of the overall series—save for some controversy with Mass Effect 3—is what led to EA’s announcement of the upcoming remastered trilogy, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. With all three games, all single-player DLC packs, and promo weapon and armor packs included and optimized fro 4K, the community is not only excited for the opportunity to get to play the games again but also share them with others who didn’t get a chance the first time around.
Other highly-regarded games that released in 2010 making appearances in the comment section are Alan Wake, Super Mario Galaxy 2, which many were surprised not to find included in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars package, and God of War 3. With these additions to the industry, 2010 is often on top 10 lists of the best years for gaming.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is set to release in 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
