Among Us players can unlock a special pet through Twitch during the month of December. Although the unlock method will take about half an hour, the unlocked pet is completely free to use in games of Among Us once it becomes available later this month.
Although playing Among Us is completely free, players normally have to pay for access to pets. Pets offer no gameplay advantage, but bring an extra bit of personality to the game. Some of the game’s cuter pets include adorable alien dogs and miniature versions of the playable crew members, inspiring adorable fan projects depicting crewmates alongside their pets. On the other hand, some pets are more menacing in nature, fitting for a game where murder can happening at any time. No pets to date have been designed as corporate promotions- until now, that is.
Among Us has partnered with Twitch to offer a pet based on Twitch’s Glitch logo. In particular, the partnership focuses on Twitch Rivals, the series of competitive streaming events that has historically seen some streamers use controversial tactics. The pet is offered as a reward for engaging with the Twitch Rivals Among Us tournament series that is currently ongoing. Once viewers have watched the streams for a total of thirty minutes, they will be able to claim the free Glitch pet. Unfortunately, the pet will not be available to use until later in month, but there’s nothing stopping viewers from claiming it now.
On top of the free pet promotion, December is an exciting time for Among Us fans for other reasons. For example, a new Among Us map will be revealed at The Game Awards on December 10th. Developer InnerSloth is also refining the game with additional language support and a range of bug fixes. Most importantly, its fanbase continues to grow, with events like the Glitch Pet promotion giving fans a chance to support both the game and their favorite Among Us streamers.
Some may be concerned that Among Us is beginning to implement third-party branded content. This could, in theory, give rise to Among Us games filled with all kinds of corporate imagery. Although branded cosmetic options are nothing new in games, fellow viral sensation Fall Guys recently made waves by running a charity bidding war to choose brand partnerships, driving a huge wave of charitable donations. Given the prominence of Among Us, its developers could choose to do something similar, but in light of the Twitch Rivals promotion it appears they are not taking this approach.
To be fair, Among Us is a free game on mobile with cosmetic purchases, and costs only $5 on PC. This means the game’s developers may need a way to increase their revenue without charging more to play the game. After all, analytics data shows that Among Us isn’t a top-grossing mobile game. If the alternative is to make players pay to access Among Us, then promotions like the Glitch Pet seem like a fair compromise.
Among Us is available for PC and mobile devices.
