Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Has a League of Legends Easter Egg

Almost a month after the game’s initial release and players are still finding Easter eggs and other hidden treasures in every corner of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. One of these little nods left by Ubisoft that’s recently been found by players was even confirmed by one of the writers and narrative designers for the game on Twitter.

While a number of these Easter eggs in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla have ranged from referencing classic series and films like Winnie the Pooh, this most recent one is directed on another video game. However, while most players would expect to see Ubisoft simply self-inserting previous IPs like Watch Dogs or older Assassin’s Creed titles, this one involves the eSports trailblazer title, League of Legends.

The Easter egg can be found when speaking to a character named Birstan while questing through Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, who informs Eivor about an upcoming hunt for a boar. During the conversation, Birstan makes passing mention to boars being a majestic creature, taking an appreciative stance towards the animal they intend to hunt. Eivor, however, responds by mentioning a “strong armed Shield Maiden” who rode into battle on a boar that she had named Bristle-Bold, which his hunting partner remarks on as strange.

Fans of League of Legends‘ classic champions will quickly recognize this reference as a callback to Sejuani, a character who rides a boar named Bristle into the rift. When this Easter Egg was finally discovered by players, Writer and Narrative Designer Samantha  Webb, who worked on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, confirmed that this is what the offhand remark is meant to allude to. It’s a small detail, one that many players may have overlooked, especially if they are unfamiliar with the champion, but it’s one of many that adds a hint of levity to the dialogue found in Ubisoft’s latest title.

These Easter eggs on their own aren’t the only things that have lent to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla‘s promising reviews, even maintaining a positive response from players nearly a month after release. However, the use of these moments does give players a quick moment that, while breaking the immersion of the game, can help with the overall atmosphere as similarly light moments ease the otherwise brutal drama taking place throughout the story. On top of all of that, it is wholesome to see Ubisoft referencing a competing game developer in such an endearing way, instead of the boasting and chiding that a lot of this style of reference humor uses to poke fun at competitors.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
