Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the year’s highest-rated and most hotly-anticipated games, with millions of people likely to begin their Night City adventures once it launches on December 10. However, individuals with epilepsy may want to exercise some caution, as Cyberpunk 2077 reportedly has some epileptic triggers that could potentially cause them to have a seizure.
This is according to Game Informer editor Liana Ruppert, who published a PSA about the potential Cyberpunk 2077 epileptic seizures. Ruppert herself has seizures, and she reportedly suffered “one major seizure” during her time with the game. In an effort to ensure that other people who experience seizures may be able to avoid similar problems, Ruppert’s PSA includes some things players will want to keep in mind while they’re playing through the game.
Ruppert mentions how Night City’s clubs and bars and their flashing lights are something that people with epilepsy will want to be cautious about, as well as the flickering imagery of Johnny Silverhand. However, what specifically caused Ruppert’s seizure was Cyberpunk 2077‘s Braindance gameplay.
As noted in Ruppert’s post, Cyberpunk 2077‘s Braindances start with main character V putting on a headset that flashes white and red lights at the player. A similar pattern is used by neurologists to diagnose people with epilepsy, and so Ruppert recommends that Cyberpunk 2077 players with epilepsy look away from the screen during these moments of gameplay. The Cyberpunk 2077 Braindances include some more imagery that will potentially trigger a seizure in someone with epilepsy, and so players will also want to be careful during these moments of gameplay as well.
Unfortunately, Ruppert’s report has caused some unforeseen responses in the community. Some have taken to attacking CD Projekt Red employees online, accusing the studio of purposefully including content that would trigger seizures in a person with epilepsy. Obviously, CD Projekt Red wouldn’t do something like this on purpose, as it creates negative publicity for its product that it has sunk millions of dollars into, and it has no reason to be malicious to its potential customers.
Accessibility in video games is a relatively new phenomenon, and not something that was given all that much thought until just recently. Things like Microsoft’s Adaptive controller and the impressive accessibility options in games like The Last of Us 2 are steps in the right direction. As gaming continues to evolve and the need for accessibility options gets more attention (like with the new Innovation in Accessibility award at The Game Awards), hopefully issues like this can be tackled head-on and resolved prior to launch.
Cyberpunk 2077 launches December 10 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions coming in 2021.
