Ghost of Tsushima Wins Player’s Voice GOTY for The Game Awards

With Geoff Keighley’s annual Game Awards showcase slated to take place on December 10, the time has almost come to see which games will secure the event’s lineup of coveted accolades. The night will see several categories crown a winner, however, its final trophy will prove the most difficult to win, as Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Doom Eternal, The Last of Us 2, Hades, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Ghost of Tsushima look to become Game of the Year.

It seems one of the six games might just have an advantage, however, with Geoff Keighley revealing on Twitter that Ghost of Tsushima has won 2020’s Player’s Voice Award. For those who haven’t watched the showcase before, the trophy is entirely decided via fan vote, meaning Sucker Punch’s acclaimed samurai action experience has officially been heralded the best game of 2020 by the general public.

As for how the vote is decided, it goes through a bracket-based system, with players having to vote for their favorite title from a selection of games through each round. Ghost of Tsushima was allegedly neck and neck with The Last of Us 2 at several points during the contest, but ultimately, it managed to secure the win. Alongside Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic adventure, it also beat out Hades, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Doom Eternal to take home the award.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the result indicates Ghost of Tsushima could be the recipient of the Game of the Year trophy at this Thursday’s showcase. There, however, fan votes will weigh less than that of a curated panel of voters, with the general public making up 10% of the vote and the panel making up 90%. Taking other award shows into consideration, it seems The Last of Us 2 could be an early pick for a potential winner as well, with the game already claiming the Ultimate Game of the Year crown at the Golden Joystick awards last month.

Ghost of Tsushima is more than worthy of a win, with the game easily standing as one of this year’s biggest and most popular titles. Not only was its main release a soaring success, with CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan claiming that it had “exceed all expectations,” but the game even launched a multiplayer mode in the same year. Titled Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, it was hailed as a superb addition to the core campaign, allowing players to team up and navigate through an eerie alternate realm filled with some of Japanese mythology’s most sinister demons.

Ghost of Tsushima is out now on PlayStation 4.
