VR is a niche segment of the gaming market, but that hasn’t stopped developers from exploring what can be done with the technology. Some researchers believe that upwards of 45 million people will use VR headsets by 2025, so it is a space worth exploring. Resolution Games has made its home in that VR space, and is developing a new fantasy RPG called Demeo.
Demeo looks to capture the spirit of tabletop RPGs, sending players on quests through dangerous dungeons and relying on teamwork to survive. The announcement trailer for Demeo showcases what appears to be some of the character builds players can work with, and teases fantasy elements classic tabletop game fans are likely familiar with. The game is a departure from Resolution’s previous work, like the dueling game Blaston. The game will be available on Oculus Quest, Rift, as well as Steam.
CEO of Resolution Games, Tommy Palm, notes that “tabletop games are seeing a renaissance of late,” with a number of people diving into Dungeons & Dragons for the first time. Palm goes on to say that “what really makes Demeo work is the synergies that players will explore as they come together to conquer something very dark.” The unique kind of teamwork required to run a successful tabletop campaign is something that the company hopes really translates to the new title.
VR is still finding its footing, and potential legal troubles with Facebook and Oculus are not helping the matter. But the technology is coming along, and game development is going strong with titles like Demeo on the way in 2021.
Demeo will launch on Oculus Quest, Rift, and Steam in 2021.
