Fans of the Killzone franchise have gone without a new entry to the series in over seven years, as the most recent entry was Killzone Shadow Fall on PS4 back in 2013. As upsetting as that may be, it hasn’t been enough to cause fans of the franchise to lose hope, but a recent update to the PlayStation website is giving fans some cause for concern.
For those that don’t know, the developers of the Killzone franchise are Guerrilla Games, a studio owned by Sony. As such, it gets a special place on PlayStation’s website as well as a mention of its popular games. It’s no secret that Guerrilla Games is also behind the extremely successful Horizon franchise, but Zero Dawn’s success and the anticipation for Forbidden West could mean bad news for Killzone.
On the website, each first party studio is listed by name alongside one or two franchises that they are best known for. Under Naughty Dog, Sony lists Jak and Daxter, Uncharted, and The Last of Us, and under Sucker Punch it references both Sly Cooper and the more recent Ghost of Tsushima, but Guerrilla Games’ entry only mentions Horizon without a single word about Killzone.
This likely wouldn’t be so alarming if other studios also only listed one major game. It’s likely at this point that more players would recognize the Horizon franchise over the Killzone franchise, so the decision to focus on that makes sense, but why not add the extra sentence unless it was something that Guerrilla Games (or Sony) wanted fans to forget about?
Of course, it’s possible that this was just an oversight and fans are overreacting, but there are some factors to consider when thinking about whether Killzone has a future on PS5. Killzone Shadow Fall earned itself a prestigious spot as a one of the PS4’s initial launch titles, but since then, nothing has really come of the franchise. With Guerrilla Games working on releasing Horizon: Forbidden West at some point in 2021, there’s really no telling when the franchise will once again return to prominence.
Thankfully, it’s clear that, at the very least, Sony hasn’t forgotten about Killzone entirely. Perhaps the best indication of this can be found in the unlikely place that is Astro’s Playroom on PS5. While progressing through the SSD Speedway, players will come across various PlayStation exclusive game references including Cloud’s Buster Sword, but towards the end of the level, a squadron of Killzone‘s infamous Helghast Soldiers can be seen doing drills.
Killzone Shadow Fall is available now on PS4.
