Out of all the major games coming out soon, Empire of Sin may have flown under many players’ radars. To those who love gangsters and strategy games however, there’s a good chance it will make a splash.
To be fair, reviews for Empire of Sin have been a bit mixed, with gameplay that doesn’t quite do justice to its story and characters. However, for any history buffs and XCOM fans (it has a similar combat structure), it’s at least worth a gander. One important aspect of the game is promoting a gangster to the role of Advisor, so here’s a primer on how to do just that.
Empire of Sin takes a while to beat, and as the player gets deeper into crime, their gang will grow in power and influence. At a certain point, it becomes necessary to bring certain members of the gang deep into the upper echelon. One of these roles is the Advisor, the second most important role in the game. Only one Advisor can be appointed at any given time, and unless the Advisor dies for one reason or another, they’re in the role for life. It’s not a choice to be made frivolously.
Players cannot appoint an Advisor at first. The ability to do so becomes available once the gang has reached a Notoriety level of 100 or higher. At this point, a gangster of significant power can be appointed to the role of Advisor. As mentioned before, this can only be done with one character, so make it a good one. This is a game where players must micromanage a good deal, even down to changing alcohol production. The choice of Advisor will stick for a while, so ensure it synergizes well with the rest of the gang’s strategy and playstyle.
There are a few factors that go into this. The Advisor provides a leadership bonus to the entire rest of the gang, and may provide other bonuses as well. The choice should be made based on stats, and not (usually) who has the craziest backstory.
The Advisor is important, but not the most important subordinate role in the game. That title belongs to the Underboss, who can only be appointed at 500 Notoriety or higher. While it’s important to appoint someone competent as the Advisor, the cream of the crop should be saved for the Underboss slot. This is just one of those “think about the future” choices players must make in strategy games like Empire of Sin, but it’s one best not forgotten.
Empire of Sin is available for PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
