Spider-Man: Miles Morales Update Adds Ray Tracing 60FPS Performance Mode

Spider-Man: Miles Morales got an update this week that adds ray-tracing and a new graphics mode called “Performance RT.” This new mode is reportedly “an alternate version of the 60 frames per second ‘Performance’ mode.” The game’s new graphical fidelity is attained by tweaking “reflection quality” and “scene resolution,” among other settings.

Developer Insomniac Games has yet to release the full patch notes for the Spider-Man: Miles Morales updateHowever, there’s some indication the improved lighting and reflections came with a price. Resolution apparently took a hit. The update also changed the quality of the background characters. There are also fewer pedestrians walking around this fictional New York City. That may not have a noticeable effect for those who spend most of their time swinging above the city, rather than on the ground.

Twitter user @ax_zer0 was among the first to show the settings screen post update. The mode joins two previous settings Spider-Man: Miles Morales players could choose. Performance RT appears to take a little from both its predecessors. The Performance mode allowed users to play Spider-Man: Miles Morales at 60 frames per second without ray tracing. However, Quality mode included ray-tracing but limited output to 30FPS.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales isn’t the first PlayStation 5 game to offer users different fidelity and performance modes. Several of the PS5’s launch titles, including Demon’s Souls, give users that choice. However, it appears this is the first to offer up a third option. It stands to reason it won’t be the last, as it taps into features readily available on the PlayStation 5.

There doesn’t appear to be a consensus over which mode is better. Whether running through Spider-Man: Miles Morales with a better frame rate or higher graphical quality is still up for debate among the game’s fanbase. While followers of @ax_zer0 appeared excited about the new update there was even debate in that thread about how Insomniac could make Spider-Man: Miles Morales even better looking.

One thing that has been largely agreed upon is that the story in the PS5 title manages to all the right notes as it weaves a tale of a new Spider-Man taking on an old friend, turned villain in the tinkerer. Indeed, some fans said the emotional impact of Miles’s story is better than what they’re given in the pivotal moment of the original Spider-Man game. The remastered version of Insomniac’s 2018 title is said to be blunted by the new face of Peter Parker.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is out now for PS4 and PS5.
