Developer miHoYo has maintained a steady pace for Genshin Impact. Fans have enjoyed several major updates since the game’s release this fall, and it seems the upcoming batch of characters and weapons won’t remain hidden much longer.
Travelers have been aware of imminent updates in general, with both miHoYo and Genshin Impact leakers indicating that new regions, characters, enemies, and even weapons are on their way. Though some of this content may not make it into the game until spring of 2021, certain content like the Dragonspine region is expected as early as this month.
Leakers claim that Dragonspine will be introduced to Genshin Impact on December 23. The icy mountainous region is currently visible on the Teyvat map, but inaccessible to players. Anybody who approaches its boundaries will be automatically forced back in the opposite direction. That said, once it’s here, players expect Dragonspine to introduce several new quests, enemies, and even weapons, as per leaker NEP NEP’s latest tweets.
Powerful characters like Albedo will allegedly be arriving around the same time as the Dragonspine update, but it seems players will have several unique weapons to look forward to as well. The game features the Anemo-aligned Mondstadt and Geo mecca Liyue as its two main regions, so Dragonspine tucked between them former two regions, would serve as the game’s third. The new weapons purportedly coming with the update will also serve as “thirds,” considering the three of them will be the third type of forgeable weapons derived from Northlander Weapon Prototypes.
The game currently allows players to forge two different four-star varieties of each weapon type, through use of Northlander Weapon Prototypes, Crystal Chunks, and White Iron Ore. Generally speaking, the pattern consists of one weapon with “Prototype” in its name (e.g. Prototype Malice, Prototype Animus), and one weapon with a unique name (e.g. Mappa Mare, Whiteblind). According to this leak, Version 1.2 of the game will introduce four new weapons, three of which are forgeable four-stars. The fourth, like The Unforged, cannot be crafted.
The Snow-Tombed Starsilver (claymore), Frostbearer (catalyst), and Dragonspine Spear (pole arm), will all be four-star weapons, as per the game’s leaked data. They will all be crafted by gathering Crystal Chunks, finding an appropriate Northlander Weapon Prototype, and collecting a new resource dubbed “Starsilver.” Apparently, these weapons will generate giant icicles above the player’s opponents, while also dealing additional damage to any nearby enemies affected by Cryo.
Presumably, players will be able to mine the new forging material throughout Dragonspine. Otherwise, it’s most likely to appear near other existing mineral deposits. Starsilver aside, the fourth weapon identified was a previously leaked free event weapon named Festering Desire, which is rumored to be tied to upcoming swordsman and alchemist Albedo.
Thanks to the datamine, players willing to gamble can start hoarding upgrade materials now, though these details are subject to change until the official Version 1.2. release. Nonetheless, the set of weapons presents a unique new Cryo ability for players to take advantage of. Though it’s tough to tell now, weapons like the Frostbearer may make excellent curveball-choices for characters like Klee, who dish out high damage via reactionary Elements that pair well with Cryo.
Genshin Impact is available now on the App Store, Google Play, PC, and PS4, and is currently in development for PS5 and Switch.
