New Epic Games Store Free Games for December 2020 Are Available Now

As it currently stands, The Epic Games Store offers some of the most valuable free titles in the gaming space, rivaling the likes of PlayStation Plus and Xbox Games with Gold. From Grand Theft Auto 5 and A Total War Saga: Troy to Watch Dogs 2 and the entire Batman: Arkham trilogy, the site is currently looked on by many as a haven for gamers on a budget, with no subscription fee required to start downloading some huge titles.

Every week sees the current free game depart and a new title become available to claim, and this week is no different, with a pair of heralded RPGs taking over from last week’s offering of Cave Story+. The current selection is Obsidian Entertainment‘s Pillar of Eternity and Tyranny, with both games available to grab right now.

The duo are claimable from today until December 17, at which time they’ll be replaced by a “mystery game” that the Epic Games Store will reveal at a later date. As for Pillars of Eternity, the 2015 title is a top-down fantasy RPG set in the world of Eora, with players assuming the role of a Watcher: a powerful warrior that can interact with people’s souls. They must set out on an epic quest to help the people of the land of Dyrwood, selecting from a number of intricate classes, making impactful moral choices, and engaging in party-based combat. It was heavily influenced by the likes of Baldur’s Gate and other classic RPGs, amassing unanimously positive reviews in its wake.

Tyrannyon the other hand, was released in 2016 and also takes place in a fantasy world. This time around, players are dropped into Terratus, where they play a Fatebinder: a highly-ranked agent in the army of Kyros the Overlord. Throughout the game, the player is tasked with restoring order to Kyros’ lands following a devastating conflict, having to make weighty moral decisions that shake the game world and change the story. It was seen by many as a spiritual sequel to Pillars of Eternity, utilizing its top-down RPG style and engine.

Now is the perfect time to play through Pillars of Eternity with Obsidian revealing Avowed earlier this year, with the game set to take place in the RPG’s world of Eora. Unlike the title, Avowed will instead utilize a first-person perspective similar to The Elder Scrolls series and looks to be much bigger than its top-down predecessor, with Microsoft attempting to sell the title as a huge, system selling exclusive. That being said, the upcoming RPG still seems a ways away, with Obsidian refraining from showing any gameplay as of yet.
