Cyberpunk 2077 has finally arrived, and with the much-anticipated game finally playable, fans have already started to search for Easter eggs. One Cyberpunk 2077 discovery sees a reference to the TV show The Office, of all things, and it is hard to miss.
While some consider The Office one of the best comedies of the 21st century, it is still a bit surprising to see the influence of Dunder Mifflin’s employees on the characters of Cyberpunk 2077. Clearly, someone at CD Projekt Red is a fan of the show, as one of the most memorable scenes from the series has been referenced inside the game. If players want to see a reference to the mockumentary, they will need to head to the location called Afterlife.
Though Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City is quite different from The Office’s modern-day city of Scranton, the futuristic setting holds an unmistakable line of dialogue that is almost a word-for-word translation of the story Hide tells Darryl in the show. After players arrive in the Afterlife area, they will meet a character named Dennis, who gives them a side quest called “Big in Japan.” Without spoiling the optional mission, players will meet a character named Haruyoshi that can be talked to after the quest is complete.
The post-mission conversation provides the Easter egg The Office fans are looking for, making “Big in Japan” one of the standout Cyberpunk 2077 side quests for those that get the joke. Haruyoshi begins his dialogue by saying “In Japan, brain surgeon, top of all,” going on to say that “one day, Tyger Claw boss need surgery. But, boss die on table! Tyger Claws were very angry.” The NPC then finishes the story, saying “I hide in boat, swim to America. Here Dennis save me. But there is secret – I kill Tyger Claw boss on purpose. World best surgeon make no mistake.”
Though the scene would be funny on its own, players that remember the moment from The Office will surely find this Easter egg hilarious. While Cyberpunk 2077 contains numerous Easter eggs, such as a “Praise The Sun” pose from Dark Souls in photo mode and an NSFW The Witcher reference on magazines, this unexpected The Office reference takes the cake in terms of humor. While few players could have expected a nod to the workplace comedy coming into the game, it is hard not to see the inclusion of one as a positive.
Considering that fans of the show have had to cope with The Office leaving Netflix soon, this Easter egg comes at a perfect time. While a simple “that’s what she said” joke in the same vein as Michael Scott would have sufficed, CD Projekt Red went above and beyond with their homage to The Office.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions coming in 2021.
