JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Production Company Opens Game Studio Led by Left 4 Dead Creator

Blockbuster director JJ Abram’s production company, Bad Robot, is best known for delivering movies such as horror franchise Cloverfield and TV shows like Lost. However, back in 2018, the company announced it would be branching into video games, striking a deal with controversial media giant Tencent to open up a new division solely focused on offering substantial gaming experiences.

Although the announcement of the Bad Robot Games division came back in 2018, today saw the publisher open its first game studio, titling the newly-formed developer Bad Robot Games Studio. Not only did the publisher reveal the name, but it also highlighted exactly who will be taking the reigns of its venture into the gaming scene, naming a notable former Valve mainstay associated with some of its biggest titles.

That name is none other than Michael Booth, the creator of Left 4 Dead and the original founder of Turtle Rock Studios. Booth has become an experienced name in the world of gaming, having worked on the likes of Counter Strike, Team Fortress 2, and Nox, as well as collaborating with several major publishers over his time in the industry. He’ll serve as the general manager of Bad Robot Games Studio, leaving his position as the director of social VR at Facebook. Speaking on the new role, Booth claims, “The games I create center around people working together to survive and thrive in fantastic worlds, which seems an excellent fit for JJ Abrams’ approach to moviemaking.”

Booth will be joined by Anna Sweet, another former Valve and Oculus developer, as the pair work towards creating new experiences for Bad Robot fans. As for what the studio will be working on, it seems a AAA title is already in production, with Sweet revealing in a statement to GamesBeat that the studio will “immerse both players and streaming audiences into a co-op cinematic experience.” The game will allegedly be coming to both consoles and PC, although there’s little information regarding whether it will be a brand new IP or an adaptation of Bad Robot’s long list of franchises.

It’s not hard to see why Bad Robot is making such a significant push into the world of video games seeing as its founder, J.J Abrams, has long been an advocate for the medium. His name has been associated with several potential movie adaptations in the past, including Portal and Half-Life, while the director has frequently discussed events in the gaming world throughout his illustrious career. Bad Robot even collaborated with Epic Games to develop Spyjinx, an upcoming mobile spy RPG that’s currently in beta in certain regions.

Bad Robot Game Studios is currently working on an untitled AAA project.
