Developers will often use their platform as a chance to discuss or shed light on important and often controversial topics of the real world, a practice that gamers have mixed feelings about. Regardless of what one’s opinion is on that, it seems that Cyberpunk 2077 is doing the same, as one fan finds an easter egg which explains CD Projekt Red’s stance on a very serious topic.
While playing Cyberpunk 2077, players will want to be scanning enemies frequently. This can give them an idea of what they’re capable of, how they can be defeated, and the like, but it also informs them of what sort of crimes they are wanted for. This easter egg was found in the wanted section of a scan.
Of course, this very important and serious topic is whether or not pineapple should go on pizza, a politically charged debate that seems to have been going on forever. The easter egg makes it clear that, at least in Night City, it is definitely not okay.
Though it isn’t explicitly stated as putting pineapple on pizza, one can infer that this particular citizen is wanted for doing just that. The crime here, the illegal use of pineapple or pineapple adjacent products, seems to be in violation of the Pizza Desecration Act, which is at least long enough to have 50 or more sections. What exactly happened that caused Night City to deem this illegal will likely never be known, but it’s a funny commentary on this classic debate.
Though fans are getting a kick out of this, some point out that there may in fact be a lore reason for this. Food is a topic that is frequently brought up in news broadcasts throughout Night City, and it seems to be in very short supply. Though putting pineapple on pizza may not be seen as wasteful today, it could be viewed that way in the year 2077. Though this is a fun, in lore explanation, it was very clearly put in place to poke fun at those that do prefer their pizza with a sweet flare.
Also of note is that this crime was enough to get the individual a bounty class of three stars. On a five star system, that seems a little excessive for something like putting pineapple on pizza, but Cyberpunk 2077 is filled with this sort of wacky humor and disproportionate punishment for criminals, so it really isn’t that surprising.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, and later on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
