When people see the designs of Pokémon, they often imagine them being very large. If you’re shrinking down monsters to fit in your pocket, they must be huge to begin with, right? The truth is that when you look at the sizes of Pokémon in the Pokédex, you may be surprised to discover that a lot of them are not as big as you may think. The beloved Pokémon anime has been known to take liberties with some of the sizes, so players are naturally surprised to realize that a Pokémon such as Groudon is only 11 feet tall.
Gaze upon the twenty tallest Pokémon in existence, and try not to hurt your neck while looking up at them; all of these Pokémon are the height of three people easily if not many, many more.
Updated December 5th, 2020 by Tanner Kinney: The colossally huge size of many Pokémon is something to be admired, even if some of the sizes are inconsistent at best. Some Pokémon feel like they should be larger, but all we have to go on is scientific data as written by literal ten-year-olds. At the very least, it’s good to admire some of the biggest Pokémon the series has to offer, legendary or not.
20 Palkia (14 feet)
Palkia, a member of the Creation Trio of legendary Pokémon, is coincidentally the shortest of the three. For whatever reason, controlling the fabric of space makes Palkia slightly less tall. Although it’s often not as beloved and remembered as either of the other two, it’s far from being a short king.
Palkia stacks up at just under 14 feet and is also tied for height with Dawn Wings Necrozma. It’s also a bit of a hunchback, so maybe if it had better posture it would be slightly taller. Either way, Palkia’s still incredibly powerful, and is certainly a behemoth compared to many other Pokémon.
19 Giratina (15 feet)
Another member of the Creation Trio, Giratina, is only a foot taller than Palkia at just under 15 feet. Its Origin Forme is actually on the list as well, with its new serpent-like body giving it a huge boost in size. However, even Altered Forme Giratina is a far cry from Gira-tiny.
Giratina is the Renegade Pokémon, controlling antimatter and the Distortion World. It basically serves as the negative to the creative tools of space and time. It holds incredible power in both of its forms. Even with its somewhat dopier beta artwork trainers laughed at, it’s always been a terrifying beast capable of great destruction.
18 Zygarde 50% (16 feet)
Interestingly enough, the incomplete form of Zygarde is actually nearly two feet taller than its Complete Forme. Serpent-like Pokémon tend to be considered taller than their bipedal or quadrupedal counterparts. It makes sense why the incomplete Zygarde is considered bigger, but it is still funny.
Zygarde, despite never getting the treatment of becoming a box legendary, is still a powerful Pokémon. It played a major role both in the anime and in a Sun and Moon sidequest involving collecting Zygarde cells. Most recently, Zygarde is the superboss of Dynamax Adventures, getting two phases in its battle.
17 Lugia (17 feet)
Lugia, the box legendary of Pokémon Silver and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, has long been an iconic and familiar legendary. It’s the guardian of the seas, and this means it needs a body fit for navigating the ocean depths. Although it is still a bird of sorts, its serpent-like features give it some extra length.
Lugia’s height is about 17 feet on the dot, making it nearly four feet taller than Ho-Oh. Its wings are huge, allowing it to use its signature Aeroblast move. And yet, despite its connections to the ocean depths, it’s a psychic-type.
16 Dialga (18 feet)
The third member of the Creation Trio, Dialga, also makes it onto the list as one of the biggest Pokémon in the series’ history. Dialga has much better posture than Palkia, standing with its head tall and a glorious crown of silver spikes adorning it. As a lord of time, it certainly deserves its terrifying, yet regal look.
Dialga clocks in at 17 feet and 9 inches, making it just a short step away from 18 feet tall. It’s a behemoth even compared to Palkia or Altered Forme Giratina, even if it gets dwarfed by Origin Forme Giratina. From my experience, more people seemed to have been drawn to Pokémon Diamond, and Dialga’s cosmically commanding presence is a part of that.
15 Guzzlord (18 Feet)
Most people can get a sense of what Guzzlord is all about just from its apt name. Known as the “Junkivore Pokémon,” Guzzlord is an Ultra Beast given the code name “UB-05 Glutton” for good reason: this beast has devoured mountains and buildings whole, while never having left any traceable droppings. Logically, you need to be tall in order to swallow buildings, and 18 feet is a pretty good start.
Though it’s a rare and dangerous beast to the Earth, Pokémon Ultra Sun’s Pokédex entry notes it as a “Common organism in the world where it normally lives.”
14 Stakataka (18 Feet)
Stakatake is a Pokémon exclusively available in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon when players are allowed a deeper look into Ultra Space. Ultra Sun’s Pokédex entry notes that it came from an Ultra Wormhole and is apparently “made up of many life-forms stacked one on top of each other.” Since it’s basically a living building, it has a massive base Defense stat of 211 and a terrible base Speed stat of 13. To be fair, buildings don’t usually tend to go places, especially not at a fast pace, either.
13 Yveltal (19 Feet)
Introduced as Pokémon Y’s mascot, Yveltal is the Pokémon of Destruction, acting as a member of the aura trio along with Xerneas and Zygarde. With a full length of exactly 19 feet, Yveltal is able to absorb the life force of other living creatures when its wings and feathers are spread wide and glow red. Pokémon Y’s Pokédex says that upon its life’s end, it “absorbs the life energy of every living thing and turns into a cocoon once more.”
12 Milotic (20 Feet)
Coming in at a staggering 20 feet is the dazzling Milotic. This divine creature comes from the humble beginnings of a Feebas and evolves to be even taller than the legendary Pokémon of Destruction. While it is a large, snake-like Pokémon, it is known to be gentle, trying to calm people’s feelings.
While it is not legendary, Milotic has a fantastic moveset and can easily hold its own in battle. The only hassle is jamming enough Pokéblocks or Poffins into a Feebas to get it to evolve. Many say that Milotic acts as a semi-counterpart Pokémon to Gyarados, another serpentine Water-type Pokémon that towers over its competition.
11 Hoopa Unbound (21 Feet)
Just one foot above Milotic is the legendary Hoopa in its Unbound form. Hoopa Unbound has the highest base Special Attack of all Dark-type Pokémon, and is tied with Mega Gyarados and Umbreon for the highest Special Defense stat of Dark-types.
Hoopa’s overall design seems to be based on Djinn (or genies) while its Unbound form resembles the six-armed Hindu deities known as Shakti. Equally likely is inspiration drawn from Taoist deity Nezha, known both as a trickster and protector of the world who also holds rings.
10 Mega Gyarados (21 Feet)
Tied with Hoopa Unbound for height is Mega Gyarados. Unlike Milotic, it is not a calm Pokémon at all. In fact, its Pokédex entry in Pokémon Sun reads “Mega Evolution also affects its brain, leaving no other function except its destructive instinct to burn everything to cinders.” So not only is it big, but it has a dangerous personality to match. Luckily, the bond between Pokémon and Trainer is strong enough to stop Gyarados from losing control…usually.
9 Giratina Origin Forme (22 Feet)
Giratina is only the only Ghost/Dragon type to exist so far, and its uniqueness has fans clamoring for any news about its upcoming game remake. Giratina has a lot going for it, being a legendary that represents antimatter, rebellion, and general bad behaviour (bad behaviour that got it banned to the Distortion World by Arceus.) Only in the Distortion World can it naturally take its Origin Forme and become 22 feet tall. Among all legendary Pokémon, Giratina may not be the biggest, but it is definitely the most edgy.
8 Rayquaza (23 Feet)
One foot over Origin Forme Giratina is the legendary Dragon/Flying-Type, Rayquaza. Known to be the argument-queller in the weather trio, Rauquaza plays an important role in every game featuring the Hoenn region, particularly Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire’s Delta Episode. Pitting Rayquaza against Deoxys may seem fair until you realize that Deoxys is only five feet tall. Yes, there are humans taller than Deoxys!
Some Pokédex entries claim Rayquaza is hundred of millions of years old, meaning that it may have grown to be the size it is today, similar to how humans have gradually grown taller throughout history.
7 Onix (28 Feet)
The staple Pokémon of Gym leader Brock, Onix beats out Rayquaza by a whole five feet. This Rock/Ground-type Pokémon has been around since the very beginning and once held the golden title of “largest Pokémon.” Sadly, times change and the crown is handed off to newer, taller creatures, but Onix’s importance will never be forgotten.
They are neither legendary nor are they an evolution of any smaller Pokémon like others on this list, making their huge size quite special in that regard. Nobody in their right mind would want to make such an intimidating creature mad.
6 Celesteela (30 Feet)
Celesteela is an Ultra Beast from Generation VII and stands as the largest of all the Ultra Beasts. Its Pokédex entry calls it the “Launch Pokémon,” a nod towards its spaceship appearance. Some have also noted its physical resemblance to Princess Kaguya in The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. Its name is most likely a combination of celestial, steel, and stella, which is Latin for star.
Not only is it one of the tallest Pokémon, but it is also one of the heaviest. It ties with Cosmoem, weighing over 2,200 pounds, twice as heavy as a grand piano.
5 Primal Kyogre (32 Feet)
Kyogre is, surprisingly enough, technically the tallest Hoenn legendary Pokémon thanks to Primal Reversion. It sits with Groudon and Rayquaza as part of the weather trio of Hoenn, brought back in Generation VI’s Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire with its new Primal form. Since Kyogre has the ability to expand oceans, it would need a massive amount of power to do so, and a massive body to contain such power. Some even consider it to be a personification of the ocean itself.
Kyogre goes from 14 feet to a whopping 32 feet in its Primal form, gaining over 170 lbs in the process and giving Groudon a run for its money. Its gorgeous design has led many fans to create art for it, including beautiful type reimaginings.
4 Mega Steelix (34 Feet)
With Onix making the list, it’s not surprising that its taller evolution would as well. Mega Steelix is six feet higher than Onix, making it the tallest of both Steel-Types and Ground-Types. While in its Mega form, its base Defense stat reaches a staggering 230, making it the highest of all Ground-type Pokémon and leaving it tied with Mega Aggron for the highest Defense of all Steel-type Pokémon.
When it isn’t busy being huge and having record-breaking stats, Mega Steelix takes full advantage of its amazing shiny form, glittering like a huge golden tower.
3 Alolan Exeggutor (35 Feet)
This cheerful tree is over 35 feet tall, dwarfing its non-Alolan relatives. Alolan Exeggutor trades its dual Grass/Psychic typing for Grass/Dragon, allowing it to learn the move Dragon Hammer upon evolving and other useful Dragon-type moves via TM.
Alolan Exeggutor’s massive size may be a reference to Island gigantism, a biological phenomenon in which animal species isolated on an island grow much larger than their mainland relatives. Of course, it also may just be a reference to tall palm trees, too.
2 Wailord (47 Feet)
It should come as no surprise that Wailord is one of the largest Pokémon out there; it’s based on the largest animal on planet Earth, the blue whale. Almost every Pokédex entry notes its large size, with Pokémon Moon’s entry saying that its size is the reason for its popularity. Omega Ruby, Y, Black, White, Diamond, Pearl, Heartgold, and Soulsilver entries all stat that Wailord is the biggest of all Pokémon identified up until now (of course, this was before Pokémon Sword & Shield.)
Besides being the largest ocean creature, Wailord has the highest base HP stat of any Water-Type Pokémon. Amusingly, in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it is a Pokémon you cannot capture because it is too big. It was even so big that it had to be re-sized for games like Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness and Pokémon Colosseum.
1 Eternatus (65 Feet)
Eternatus is yet another legendary Pokémon added to the National Pokédex by Generation VIII’s Sword & Shield, and a very important one at that. It’s known as the “Gigantic Pokémon” and is a whopping 65 feet long, and that’s in its normal state.
According to the Pokédex, Eternatus was “inside a meteorite that fell 20,000 years ago” and also has a connection to the phenomenon of Dynamaxing, if its abilities weren’t any indication. When Dynamaxed, Eternatus becomes a massive 328 feet long, or exactly 100 meters, making it undeniably the largest Pokémon ever discovered.
