The roguelike has evolved a great deal in recent years thanks to games like Spelunky, Dead Cells, and, most recently, Hades. Yet with all this advancement, longtime fans of the genre may be yearning for something a little more old-school. Fortunately, that’s just what they’ll be getting early next year, as it’s been announced that a sequel to the cult classic ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery) is in development.
Said sequel is called Ultimate ADOM – Caverns of Chaos, and is coming out on February 11, 2021 courtesy of developer Team ADOM and publisher Assemble Entertainment. The game will be launching on Steam Early Access, so players can expect the game to grow and improve a noticeable deal beyond its initial debut.
Maintaining the grid-based dungeon-crawling of the 1994 original, Ultimate ADOM will task players with once more protecting the land of Ancardia from the forces of Chaos, and they will be able to customize their character from a wide variety of races, classes, factions, and genders. As they make their way through procedurally-generated dungeons, they will be able to customize their experience further through over 80 skill trees, dozens of discoverable skills, 100 spells, and a number of other gameplay features. What’s more, there will also be the option to play Ultimate ADOM in the first game’s ASCII format, reminiscent of the original Rogue that gave the genre its name.
If they can’t wait for February, interested gamers can try out the 2012 updated version of the first ADOM on both Steam for $14.99. The ADOM website is also offering a free version of the classic roguelike in both graphical and ASCII modes, for those who want to save up for Ultimate ADOM.
Ultimate ADOM – Caverns of Chaos will launch in early access on February 11, 2021 for PC.
